I think it's a great question.

I would not give consent to use my iron

Just say no.

Basically nothing good can ever come from consenting to law enforcement requests. Only the status quo. At best. Just. Say. No.

I guess I'm missing the point or am just naive?

When I see a warden I usually say hi and ask if he wants to see my license and take, and pull out whatever fish/abs etc I have and throw them on my hawg trough or ab gauge....

I don't have anything to hide, I want it to be a positive experience, and try and make the most of it....and so far it always has been...regardless of whether I've had monster fish/abs or just legal ones....

Just the way I am I guess?

Sincerely,

Jim

Back in the day if you ever had to deal with the D-Head at Stillwater North you'd understand.
Every weekend that guy would give me the run around with my abs. Never in a friendly way either.
Caught the guy at 10:30 PM in the tall grass spying on our campsite one night.
One time I was walking back to the camp with my gear and abs, obviously sea sick, and he stopped me in the road and wanted to see my license and abs. I was on a first name basis with this guy and he had checked me dozens of times in the past, literally. I've always been legal.
I was puking and he told me to open my float so he could check my abs.
I replied, F#(K YOU! I'm sick, open it yourself.
That was the last time I ever stayed at SW North until 2 years ago.
He's since long gone.

I have hunted the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area since its inception. Before that I used to have a blind on th Conway Ranch just north of there in the Bypass. I knew "Steve" since he grew up on the Conway, his dad having been the water master. Anyway, "Steve" grew up, wento to an academy, joined the local police department, and eventually became a game warden. While I was working at UCD Police Department, we had a couple of occasions to work together on guys poaching in Putah Creek, etc. He is genuinely a great guy. One early morning, while our mutual friend Lee and I were walking to a blind in the wildlife area, we found "Steve" sitting on a quad in the middle of the dirt road. He said "State game warden, guys." I said, "Is that you, "Steve?" He said, "Yeah, Dan?" "Yup." And then it's all "Hey, good to see ya, how's it going... " and "Dump out your packs. I need to check for more than 25 shotgun shells." We both said "No problem." and complied. He was doing his job. That's all.

I did ask "Steve" a while back about a guy who got cited for ab diving with only a 10" gauge. His reply was that it was the letter of the law that we have to carry a 7" gauge, but tagging a guy for it in this circumstance was being a bit prickly when an explanation and warning would suffice.
Warning! Retiree; Knows it all and has plenty of time to tell you about it.

Be nice. Be polite. Comply with demands. Don't offer anything and don't give consent to anything.  That is how all law enforcement interactions should go.

This is a good question, and my answer is similar to this:

Quote from: Jeremy
just swim five feet and you'll find an 8".

If I'm at a very over-picked spot on a rough day I might pick an ab that's not too far over legal size, so it's possible that I could end up in trouble if my 7" gauge is actually 6.9...

Usually when I go abalone hunting I go to places where I may find a ten, and I might settle for a 9+.  In today's resource-depleted and potentially over-scrutinized world, it's probably a very good idea to just go for abs that are significantly larger than the legal minimum.

Woah woah woah.

Let's back up a bit.

Where are you finding 10" abs and not wearing gloves?????

+1
And I ask them about where they would fish. I've always had very positive interactions with DF&W and rangers.

Let them use your gauge,it's the gauge you use to measure the abs in your bag.i always follow a few steps.be nice, compliant, and keep it short . remember these guys although they're  not supposed too but can remember you and bust your chops everytime  they see you
My biggest worry is that my wife(when I'm dead)will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it
