A couple weeks ago I came across this adapter on Amazon to refill those little camping propane canisters using a bigger tank. I figured seeming I use them quiet frequently couldn't hurt to try it out for being under $12 ( price changes from time to time on amazon ).. I love this thing, I am sure a lot of you already know of them but I bet there is a bunch that never seen them. I highly recommend this product, I wont have to over pay for new ones again, saves you like 75% cost on refilling them

I've been doing that for a few years now. It's the only way to go.

They don't quite fill tank to full like a new tank.  At least I can't get mine to fill full.  Anyone else have that issue?

I flip the tank upside down and leave over night, they get pretty darn full, plus beats 4-6 bucks a pop new

years back I threw away to sheet metal mans iron kettles with about 2 gallon pancake propane tanks because they didn't have OPD valves. later on I asked a sheet metal man how he got his tanks filled because they look so old. told me they do the same thing at the shop. I feel so stupid later because I love those two gallon pancake tanks

How close to full does it get?

I found the trick to filling all the way.... Freeze the 1lb tank before you fill... then after filling put it BACK in the freezer again, then top it up. Works well. Better if Big tank is warmer too...  :smt003 Got my adapter at wallmart $14.00 :smt002
my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

Yeah, they're not like a new can, more like a good 50% full. It's still cheaper and I overcome by treating two as one.
I fill them with a newly filled 5 gallon can, upside down, and it takes only a minute or two. You can hear the hissing stop, meaning the can is as full as it's going to get.
Be careful, sometimes the green can doesn't quite seal up and leaks. The smell luckily gives that away. Throw that one away.
If you don't know where you're headed, any road could get you there.

I have been using a similar refiller over the summer. Seriously, its the only way to go. 1) Save on gas 2) Saves on environmental waste 3) Save you money! what is there not to like. However, you need to freeze the empty canister first.
Propane moves from warmer temps to colder temps so freezing the canisters will improve the fill up ratio.  Thanks for sharing.

When I first saw this post I was gonna put in a little warning but thought better of it,

Now with some of the posts about how to get the tank "fuller" I gotta chime in.

I have quite a bit of experience with high pressure tanks and propane in particular.

The dip tube length (the little screw vent on the valve) on a liquid propane tank is set to spray liquid out at 80% full. This is also the DOT reg. And the setting on the OPD.

This is so that you can't (shouldn't) fill past that to allow for expansion of the liquid.

Gas compresses, liquid doesn't, if a tank is too full and the liquid in the tank expands enough from heat whether it be from a hot day or a fire it can and WILL rupture the tank.

In my mind any effort to go past the 80% full rule is insane,  sure the chances are really minimal that you could get the tank full enough to rupture but the consequences are catastrophic. Bear in mind any rupture wouldn't happen at the time of filling because the tank will be cold, it would happen later on with a little warmth.

The pressure relief valves on propane tanks ought to take care of this but bottom line some times they don't.

Good point. Weigh a new one and weigh the refill is an easy way to know how full it is.

On a normal fill. It's might reach 50% By cooling it and filling it a second time, there is still an air gap. Weigh it before and after? Suspect they will not overfill due to design but I'm not basing that on any research or facts... Good warning... Risk involved (in the fine print... :smt003)
