Dale, seriously, thank you for the schooling on the humidity issue.  Makes sense.

+1.  Thank you Dale.  I, for one, know very little on the matter and will do my best to educate myself prior to filling.

FUN POLICE STRIKE AGAIN!

So what it is that you have against safety?  The man is just trying to educate people.

Back in my working life,,,,,,For a period of about 5 years I was immersed in all things propane, it was quite an education.  Somewhat unrelated I also got schooled in pressure vessel fabrication, metallurgy, testing, and corrosion.

We had endless safety sessions, one of which was centered around the idea of how you would feel if you saw someone doing something unsafe and didn't say anything and then having the worst happen.

Believe me it bugs me too, to throw away those little bottles, after I'm sure they're empty I toss them in the recycle, maybe they end up as scrap iron, maybe the get sorted out??

Sorry for the threadjack.

Safety is great! I like the idea of buying the refillable small tanks. It is just that some people take the Safety ideas to extreme measures like the banning of lead in California.
Or the opposite  mercury containing light bulbs being ok to buy sell and use  because they are energy efficient I do not consider that safe at all.

How do we protect ourselves from the meth cookers that use 5 gallon propane tanks? Do we get back meth filled propane  when we exchange our tanks?

I just realized why my grill has been acting all squirrelly and then the cooking grate fell out one bar at a time.

I have the small one pound refillable propane cylinders.  Never need to throw them away and legal to transport after being refilled. DOT certified. CA company. Group discounts available.  Happy to share more info or answer questions.

The Coleman 1 pound propane tanks I have in my garage say "Do not refill this cylinder.  Refilling may cause explosion. Federal law forbids transportation if refilled - penalty up to $500,000 and 5 years imprisonment (49 U.S.C. 5124)."

You are correct Pete, that is another great reason NOT to be refilling single-use disposable 1 Lb. bottles.  The Flameking cylinders are certified refillable, reusable, and legally transportable in the US and Canada.  You can see them here:  www.propane-refill.com

Alfredo- thanks for the link.  Yes, U-Haul has rolled out the Flameking 1 Lb. cylinders in CA to start, but plan for nationwide.  They will be selling, refilling, and exchanging.  And if you still DIY- Flameking has now rolled out the Refill Kit so you can still refill at home from your BBQ tank: http://www.ebay.com/itm/252403824428?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1586.l2648

Yes, I am a factory rep....  Cheers :smt006

$9 this morning on Amazon for link provided at the top of this post!

Can't recall where it was now, but I bought (Maybe Costco
?) 4 pack of the little cylinders for a camping trip and 2 of the 4 bottles wouldn't thread onto my little Webber grill or my propane lamp!  Waste of $$ there.  Visually, completely wrong threads on the bottles! Course I didn't think to inspect each bottle in the 4 pack before I purchased them, kinda hard to do with the little white cap on them inside the shrink-wrap!  :smt013

For some uses I get the small bottles but why don't most of you just run a 5 gallon tank with a distribution tree. You can run stoves and lanterns galore without having to deal with all of the hassles of filling 1 gal containers.
