Did we decide on a launch site and time for 2/10? Weather might not be great, but I am still in if everyone else is. I decided to bring everything except live bait. Never fished for stripers with flies, but thought it might be a good opportunity to get some pointers if some of the fly guys are out there.

Hey Scott, The flies that have taken momma linesides are clousers and deceivers size 2 to 3/0.you'll  also need sinking line as fast a sink rate as you can get.I use commercial shooting heads SA Streamer express and Teeny.

Walking shoes with your kayak is an excellent idea. I can see where in foul conditions it would be a lot better to take the long walk than try to yak back.

Thanks for the fly tips. I picked up a SA Streamer Express based on your recommendations a few months ago and I have some clouser minnows. I have only fished dry flies and nymphs with floating lines non-yak so this is going to be a learning and recon trip for me. I still need  to make a stripping basket, hopefully tomorrow morning.

Just an FYI: just talked to Rickey...we will cancel the overnight camping trip - because of the rain...BUT we will still fish San Luis on Saturday. We will launch on Basalt - I have no idea where it is but I know I can find it...anyway, Rickey will be there around 8AM on Channel 69.....I'll try to make it earlier. See you guys then

If the wind becomes a factor at San luis, I'm thinking of heading to Los Banos as a "Plan B" - it's about 20 minutes away. (never fished there either)

I will be there at 700. Probably not a good day for fly casting.

I'm out!...due to predicted heavy wind and rain.I don't like doing anything in the wind! ....except 
Take some pics. and HOOK some FISH! so I can kick myself and pretend on monday that I went too.OK!

The big lake is very dangerous when the wind picks up.  It seems like at once per year a boat gets capsized due to heavy winds.  If you go, please becareful. 

The D-Dam is a great 2nd choice, there are trout and Black bass and a 5 mph speed limit.

 I would recommend launching at Dinosaur point and go south to Portuguese cove. If the wind is blowing the waves on that side won't be as bad, and you can hug the shore. Basalt in a wind is just plain Nasty! The wind has a big part of the lake to hit before it gets to the Basalt launch, and Basalt almost directly faces into the wind.
I've been on the lake in high winds, both in a PB and in the yak. Those waves don't come in sets, you can't predict them.

I was planning on going Sunday, now it's a wait and see trip.

It is about 36 miles on Hwy 152  from Gilroy, exiting off of US 101.  Turn right on Gonzaga Road.

O'Neill Forebay is about 2.5 miles further down Hwy 152.  Then turn left (heading north on HWY 33) for about .3 miles - Hang a left on Donohugh Road to reach the lake.

Thanks for the tips all  I'd rather avoid the wind if possible that's why I mentioned Los Banos as a back-up plan.
