Self rescue is something everyone on a kayak should be able to do.  Why did this make the news?

Wow...It takes a lot of effort to flip the Outback especially on a lake!  Glad he's OK.

Probably because he actually flipped an OB.

I just saw this on the news. He hung on to the upside down kayak until rescue swimmers got to him. I have a feeling there will be another outback for sale on craigslist.

I've never been to Lake Merced so maybe there are things there that I am not aware of but, how exactly was he in danger? It doesn't look much wider than Lake Del Valle and even as out of shape as I am, I can swim across without batting an eye.

I mean, maybe he can't swim but I'd argue he probably shouldn't be on a little boat in the water if he can't swim...

Not sure if he knew how to do self rescue; he didnt seemed to phased after he was back on land...

kinda joke'd around about him being made fun of for the next couple of months.

It did look like he "had" a lot of stuff on his kayak... he said he was reaching back to get something out of the rear well, when it happened; he probably wasnt able to flip it back over by himself...

Did the same thing myself outside of Trinidad last year. Water was like a lake and it's been the only time I flipped my Outback in 4 years! Had a couple of big Black Rockfish on the line and reached way back to get my net and levered myself right into the salt! Had to grab the Mirage fin to yank the boat right side up, luckily I was with someone who stabilized my boat so I could hop back on board. Lost some gear that wasn't floated or leashed, toasted the sonar, but overall a good educational experience although expensive. Was wearing a wetsuit and didn't feel cold at all.

I flipped it only once...intentionally and it's not easy.  I guess you're the OB flipping expert (j/k)  :smt003

If you can't self rescue, buy a boat. Sports not for everyone.
