Wow...It takes a lot of effort to flip the Outback especially on a lake!  Glad he's OK.

Don't understand your response???

I know that salt water is more dense than fresh so you are more bouyant in the ocean.....but Merced is not "like a lake" it is a lake  :smt003

I think it would be harder to flip in the ocean since there are more unforeseen variables to contend with.

If you can't self rescue, buy a boat. Sports not for everyone.

I made a mistake getting out of my Outback and stepping up onto a dock.  For whatever reason I lost my footing, and stepped back onto my kayak and the whole thing flipped sending me straight into the water and all of my gear as well.  It was in January if I recall correctly and that water was REALLY cold.  Felt like Andy had just punched me in the gut and instantly I was gasping hard for air.  I felt really glad to have my PFD on and was clinging to the dock and righted my kayak, gathered some of the floating lures and such, and then pulled my way back onto shore, exhausted.  Lost my new bass rod combo and a bunch of other stuff.  That like 3 minutes seemed like a lifetime in the water, soooooo cold.   :smt009

I think the ocean is easier to flip than lake because of the tidal and waves assuming the same wind condition in both scenarios.

I think half the people in this thread are talking about flipping a boat over and falling into the drink and the other half are talking about flipping a boat back over after dumping.

I flipped it only once...intentionally and it's not easy.  I guess you're the OB flipping expert (j/k)  :smt003

The bad part is I did my first flip in front of Mooch, recovered and as I was about to get back in the seat I put too much weight down on my arm and went into the drink  again. He laughed. I've done two more out of the outback and one out of the sportsman. You may say I am the "expert!" :smt003

I was at a impromptu self rescue class  where Sean Morley from Jackson was teaching ...Rockroach put it together

Anyway it was at Timber Cove .Some of us switched up kayaks. I borrowed a Hobie can't remember who as I was new .

That sumbiotch was a lot harder to flip than my T-13 and getting back upright  was just as easy as the T-13 but getting on the deck a little different due to the sides of the hull being higher ,  had to really kick to get back  :smt001

Also did the same in fresh water at Lake Sonoma did not notice a difference in trying to flip it , same results on both fresh or salt

I remember that class VK.  Had fun and learned a lot.  Since then I have bought a hobie outback and have had the opportunity to flip it a couple times.  Always in the ocean and on the way back in through the surf.  Some times it's because weight belt or heavy fish stringer has caused it to lean to one side and others because the waves just pick up the kayak and turns it sideways.  I haven't noticed it in other kayaks as much as the outback.  Mostly because it is wide and waves don't cut through.  So now if there is any wave I expect to flip it when coming back in and if I don't then I am happy.  That's why I prefer locations that are protected from rolling waves.
