And, more importantly, it is to vouch that you at least know what you are doing on the salt.

Dray - Thank you so much for that perspective!  I didn't realize that I may be alienating people with the rule.

Doug - Thank you for your explanation.

Basically, the sponsorship rule is as Antonio summarized it and Dustin added to it.

It's not hard to get sponsored, and since we've had the sponsorship rule we have not had any problems.  It's a good rule.  :smt001

All are welcome.

Okay, sorry about that.  Thanks for explaining and for recognizing that some may feel excluded by that rule.

Three-fourths of the Earth's surface is water, and one-fourth is land. It is quite clear that the good Lord intended us to spend triple the amount of time fishing as taking care of the lawn.

This will be my 7th year in a row at Gimme Shelter...I was there before the "sponsorship rule" was created, was involved in a part of the incident that contributed to its creation (since I was helping Eric as a campground liaison that year and talked with Jack a lot during and after that night), and have seen how it has played out in real life in the years since then...

I personally think the rule has been a tremendous success, and have not heard of anyone not being able to find a sponsor, and the people I have sponsored in the past have become good friends and fishing partners (Sarge is a great example of a new guy I sponsored that comes to mind).

All it takes is a PM to an NCKA member you may know from fishing or chatting online or previous events, or a post introducing yourself and your level of salt experience and asking for a sponsor...

I've never seen anyone that I can recall actively looking for someone to be their sponsor and not be able to get one...

Anyway, please don't feel excluded, but please realize that there are some very good reasons for Eric and the community wanting to have this rule in place.

That was totally my understanding.  While fishing at GSX would be awesome, my lack of equipment and experience in the salt will keep me on dry land.  With that said I'm still looking forward to the event pending unforeseen issues with work deadlines (construction)

You need to start somewhere. Try to get out before the deadline to enter with someone at the Central area when it opens April 2. Let them help you a bit and maybe they will sponsor you. It may end up no one goes out tourney day due to conditions also. Make sure you have all the safety gear too. That will help impress your sponsor.

My wife and I were married on April fools day 1989  :smt008  We will be on the coast but certainly not fishing the opener.

I've got a gps and vhf but lacking plenty of other gear, both safety and fishing.  I'll get on the water, it's just going to take some time.  I'm ok with that.

Hi all,
Looking for a sponsor for the GSX. It's been on my bucket list to fish the cove since I started kayak fishing 15+ years ago. I will be traveling up from ventura on Thursday  .. A short 8 hr drive. Good news is that I don't bite and retired my rowdy side 2 decades ago. Perhaps we can meet up on Thursday pm for a cold one...
Thanks
Joe

Don't let the lack of equipment stop you from entering.  I'll gladly LOAN you fishing gear.  I think I even have a wetsuit you could use (depending on your size) and if you show up on Thursday or Friday, I'll even pre-fish with you.  It's not that I'm generous, it's just if you are that inexperience on saltwater, I might finally be able to out fish someone!  Just kidding of course.  True confession time:  The last two GS's I did well on the pre-fish days, but on tourney days, I stayed on dry land due to ocean conditions.
