I want to fish a season finale Christmas weekend. With the threat of a record El Nino hanging over us I'm not going to just cross my fingers and hope. Who knows what the future will bring. I'm goning to hit the ocean when the conditions are good and if I get another chance at the end of December all the better.   :smt006

That is a very poorly written article (clearly done by a scientist haha). With the worst infographics ever. Not your fault, Traildad. There was some good info.

Referencing that La Nina period of the early 2000s: those were the years we saw record returns of salmon to the Central Valley rivers.  I think something like 800,000 adults returned to the Sac in 2002.  The drought part would still make things terrible for freshwater habitat, but ocean conditions could become more favorable for salmon in a La Nina compared to what they've been the last several years (terrible).

Just sayin!

There were also more defined temp breaks offshore for albacore fishing.....the low temps kinda turned off the nearshore rockfishing though.....there's good and bad.

I like the OP's premise. Fish like a mofo November and December. I have 2 days on the delta this weekend and 2 days wherever T-day weekend.

Yes. If the storm door opens that might be the end of the season. I'm going to hope for Christmas fishing, but I'm not going to put all my eggs in one basket. For those that have made plenty of ocean trips already maybe it's not as important. I've made five trips to the coast this season. On one I launched and turned back and didn't launch last week. I'd like to get a couple more trips in before the season ends.  :smt006

Enh... the weather guessers said a few years back the El Nino was going to be bad.  It wasn't! So, until "The storm doors open here" I'm not believing it!

I was hoping to get to the coast before the storms. The bird migration has not really happened, but they are starting to show now. So for me to hit the coast, weather is going to have to be EXCELLENT, and I will probably bring a shotgun to pop some scotters and other ocean waterfowl I have never shot. But if the swell and weather are bad, I will be tucked inland, poppin ducks and catching stripers.  :smt006 :smt006
Live your life, the way you want to be remembered. Don't have any regrets, we only get this one dance to make it count. Start at your eulogy, and work backwards.

When one door opens the other one closes. Believe or not, I just don't want to miss out.
