Hi all,
I've got my eyes set on an Ocean Kayak Trident 13 (army camo maybe OR yellow). Anyway, I plan to first test paddle one before buying; however, from the looks of things and from peeps experience with them, they seem pretty sweet. I want to buy new and am looking for places that may have a 2014 or 2015 model at a GREAT price (700 to 850ish). Can anyone steer me towards a place to try one out (near monterey) and also towards a dealership that may have any deals. I've seen one for 850 and a few for around 900 and so i'm thinking I can probably even do a bit better.

Thank you <*((((><

Be sure to demo as many kayaks as you can before pulling the trigger. The T-13/15 is definitely a favorite here. But  isn't the best fit for everybody. Good luck!

I've seen Craig's kayak at the Simply Fishing Event.  Looks clean and sweet.

There are (2) shops in Moss Landing where you can try a variety of brands models:  Kayak Connection & Monterey Bay Kayaks.  In Monterey, you have Monterey Bay Kayaks.  In Santa Cruz, you have Kayak Connection.

If you buy it from Craig (ravensblack) it comes with a lot of good luck a fishing juju. I bought a T13 with FF from him back in April. He is a great guy and it was a great deal. Just my 2 cents.

Monterey Bay Kayaks usually sells off their rental inventory around this time of the year for a good price BUT they have been rentals so keep that in mind when looking them over; don't simply look based on price.

I bought many, cars, moto and misc toys.  I never seeked a specific color. Just as long as its clean and good price.

You willing to spend 900 for a kayak.  you will eventually need and want a fish finder.. rudder.  It adds up.

I bought 2 kayaks and both used and not my first choice of color. But learned to like it.   Ignore scratched.. They will happen if your launching into the ocean.

I think MOST of us started off with something we "thought" we wanted or didn't "really" want because of color, etc.. & then later ended up selling only to spend more to get what we wanted.  Took me 2 starter kayaks before I ponied up for what I wanted.  The "color specific" shopping can be a bit of a bear at times.

Thanks for the wonderful insights everyone; not taken lightly. I've already had a couple of kayaks in the recent months and it seems i need to go paddle a few around to finally get what I really like. However, I feel a bit guilty about going to a shop to try them out if i probably won't buy from them. Thoughts?
Also, where is Craig located (ravensblack); looks like petaluma and thats quite a trek from Monterey...

My personal feeling on this is:  If you have NO plans to buy from the dealer, then don't take them up on a "free" test paddle; rent it from them instead.  Test drives take up shop time & resources with little to no return if the mindset is you will be looking on Craigslist for a better deal.  Local shops are generally smaller, family-type businesses that have limited manpower/resources.  Most of the local shops will be willing to work with you a bit on price/offers, etc. but go into this being realistic in what you have to spend vs. what you expect to buy.  Try & be as open to color choices as you can/want since they may not carry the color you want in the price you are looking to spend; especially if it was a used/demo kayak.

Sounds like you are on track though!

Go to MBK in Moss Landing and ask for Luke, then tell him Pat sent you.
Or go to Kayak Connection and ask for Dave, then tell him Big Jim sent you.
:-)
If you want to test out an OK Ultra 4.7, you can borrow mine. I never use it anymore unless I'm bringing my son with me. I'm in Marina.
