Thinking about taking a trip to Alaska and try some kayak fishing for halibut, and salmon. I've been to Alaska ( Homer) several times. Tried to find a guide who kayaks with no luck. Also tried to find a Kayaking club in the area with same result nothing.  A few months ago or longer I read a tex  that was posted on NCKA about fishing trip in Alaska. Could not find it. Is there a kayak club in Alaska or a store/shop in Alaska not particular (Homer, Seward, Valdez, Kodiak) that can provide some guidance . Any help would be appreciated

I do not believe there are any active kayak fishing guides in Alaska these days.

I would check in with NorthWestKayakAnglers.com.  That's your closest thing to a local kayak fishing club, and there are quite a few active Alaska kayak anglers there.

If you have more specific thoughts in mind, like area and time of year, I also can give pointers, having kayak fished many areas of Alaska.

Is there no longer a guide in Ketchikan?  I know there used to be a fellow there that guided adventure tours and fishing trips.

Howard McKim officially stopped guiding kayak fishing trips a number of years ago.  He's been known to rent a SOT kayak out to the odd DIY'er every now and then, although his fleet of SOT's has been diminishing as he switched over to all SIK for his tour business.

I was thinking of contacting a charter in Seward for a possible mothership out to big halis. Any interest in this? I know a guy in Petaluma who worked the small charters and he knows some good ones.

Craig, you should talk to Chris Mautino about this.  I know he has looked into this quite a bit in the past, but never got to the point of actually doing it.  BTW, Chris sold his outfit up in Seward, Liquid Adventures, which is why I didn't include him in the list of Alaska kayak fishing guides.  It was never a big part of his business anyways, and he may not even have been running kayak fishing trips the past few years.

If you're flying into Anchorage, I'd try Alaska Raft and Kayak for rentals.  If you're heading to Valdez, check with Kimberlain's.  Last I heard they were renting out the P13's we sent up there in 07.  In Seward, you can still try Liquid Adventures, as they exist and have at least 2 P15's from Chris' old fleet.  In Anchorage, try Howard, he may still have some fishing kayaks around for rental.  In Prince of Wales Island, try Coffman Cove.  They have some Hobies there.  Jude, is this where you are talking about?  There used to be a guide in Juneau years ago, who mainly catered to the cruise ship peeps.  I've never heard anything more than that about him.

Alaska is huge.  As you can see, really no kayak fishing guides.  And just as few rentals.  I'm constantly researching areas to go up there and have a pretty good idea of the lay of the land.  Getting kayaks is the hardest part of the logistics, to the point that I've often considered shipping a few up there and having some friends store them.

I was in Sitka and had a buddy who lives there part time mother ship me out on a Zodiak  :smt005 ...but he is down in Baja now.  All float plane/kayak rental arrangements were thousands of dollars, and these were not kayak fishing outfitters.
