Just bought a killer new / problematic Thresher 14 kayak that has had a complete hack repair to it... Really nice yak would hate to see it go to waste any help with a expert plastic welder or shop near Santa Cruz would be great!!!!!

If anyone has worked with plastic and can give me any pointers or would like to make some extra side cash, I am more then willing to see what we can do to make this beauty back to Beautiful!

First you need to remove all that crap to see how extensive the damage really is. Lots of scraping involved. But the good news is nothing really sticks to HDPE, so it will all come off eventually.

Bring it by my shop and I'll take a closer look at it.   Should be doable.

Keep us posted. I would love to see what Jim can do to repair that kayak.

Unfortunately, the way the kayak was designed and the repair alone wouldn't be worth while... The scuppers (almost 8 of the 10, are almost paper thin in material)... I have contacted Confluence about this.. We will see what they say...

It is a repair that should've been done properly in the first place, however that was not the case, only making things worse.. Unfortunately, I was wanting to keep the kayak for myself... but I just could not come to trust such damages out 6-10 miles off shore.... there fore..... she's going to the recyclers :(

A brand new 2015 Thresher 14... Gone.... it was a very sad thing to decide, but it looks like even with the two scuppers (one is completely cracked in half) that were repaired, it may be a longer list of items down the road.....

SUPER BUMMED! But thanks again Jim for showing me the shop and helping diagnose the issue... it is a hard to let go situation that is for sure!

Wow what i waste. Im thinking to get a new thresher, but after seeing this. Might rethink, is it a defect? Or bad design? Or user abuse that caused this?  Id hate to run into the same problem when i get mine.

Honestly... I love Wilderness Kayaks.. but after really investigating the design, measuring the plastic depth and inspecting the yak thoroughly, I would say its a design flaw for sure.

The scuppers are shaped oddly, creating a thin connection from the top deck to the bottom hull, this connection is then drilled after the molding process, creating an even thinner connection. I found this out with a flash light. The plastic on the yak is an avg of about 1/16" thick, the light hardly shines through... however where the scuppers are ground out, they are almost paper thin! I will post photos so you can get a better understanding.
