I torn down and lubed my trusty Shimano BaitRunner reel today. As I was putting it back together, I noticed that the spool support (the gear looking thing in the picture) would no longer lock onto the main shaft. The teeth on the main shaft that are suppose to grab onto the spool support have worn down to the point that the spool support just free spins around it. Upon review of the BaitRunner schematic, I realized that the 2 parts are suppose to be 1, and was not meant to be taken apart and put back together as many times as I have. D'oh!

Normally I would just call Shimano and purchase a replacement main shaft. But this reel is no longer serviced by Shimano and a replacement shaft is not available. Is there a way to permanently attach the 2 pieces? The main shaft is made of stainless steel, and the spool support is made of steel I think. Can they be welded together?

Don't bother.  Get a new one, or a good used one.

My first thought would be a two-part epoxy product (e.g JB Weld). Not sure if you have extra clearance on either side of the spool support once assembled, but if so you could extend the epoxy up one side or both. Properly prepped the bond should be good.

I enjoy the challenge of repairing things though, so maybe follow Bushy's advice instead.  :smt001
