Went out of Monterey Bay with a friend on his PB for some last day of rockcoding. The water was pretty ruff out by the point so we stayed clear from that spot. We found an area close buy that was not to swelley and started to hook-up on some small blues. The next drop down i felt a hit on the way down at first i thought it was a nother blue. But as I got it closer to the boat it appeared to be a mackerel and as soon as i got his head out of the water it shook loose but not before we got A good look. turned out it was a small Bonito. I thought to my self, no way not this far up the coast in the winter.

At this time we got a call from another Friend that was fishing near Carmella bay and gave us a report that they just caught a ten pound Bonito while jigging for rockcod. We got pretty excited and couldn't decide if we wanted to go that far since the weather  wasn't looking to good. We decided to take the chance and went for it . My buddy had a few Bonito jigs so we  rig them up and started to troll 3-4 nots towards Carmel.  the conditions on the way was turning to are favor and the ocean started to calm-down next thing we saw was one of the rods go bendo and the reel screaming... my friend picks the  rod up and started to battle the fish. after 10 or 15minutes we land the 12lb. Bonito. It wasn't wide open or anything close to it, but we ended the rockcode season with are limit and a bonus of a 12, 7 , and 13lb Bonito's

I will try to post some pictures soon.

Bro this is getting freaky.  You catch birds, you catch whitefish in Monterey, you catch warm water fish in freakin cold weather, what next?  When the swell calms down a bit lets do some sandabbing.  Or should I say I'll do some dabbing, you probably will pick up a dorado!

Congrats on the mixed bag

Rock on Alex!!! :smt003 I personally don't like the bonito to eat :smt011 but they are really fun to catch.  No sand dabs?
