Been hearing about several shark attack around the state. Started reading about the shark shield. Does anyone have and use one. Pro's and con's appreciated. Don't really think about sharks enjoying fishing from kayak. I know they could be around. Just curious. Thanks for the input.

Really? where are you hearing about these attacks? I haven't heard of any recently. I went to a shark shield presentation in Moss Landing and was impressed by their data and the footage they captured. It seemed pretty easy to use. The only con I can think of is the price. They're spendy...but I guess so is a prosthetic leg

I have read that some sharks become accustomed to the emissions from shark shields, over time. Would make sense to make shark shields where you can increase intensity, if needed.

There have been three reports of encounters between white sharks and kayaks this month at Trinidad.

Were these attacks or just a kayaker who saw a shark while out there?

One was Cameron. He got followed for a bit. The other two were reported on humboldt tuna and the shark knocked the kayakers off their boat.

Not that I recall. There is a post on humboldt tuna about it but I can't get the site to load on my phone right now for whatever reason. Maybe someone else can copy it and post it here.

No cons to actually using it that I can see---just put it thru a scupper hole, turn it on, and forget about it. It's pretty durable too, as I've forgotten to pull it up a few times and dragged it over the beach and dock.

I have one and yes the intensity on mine is adjustable. As far as how well it works who knows we don't see the sharks. But they do give a piece of mind. As for sharks getting used to it. I don't think that would be possible, for two reasons. One there are not that many being used, two I don't know many people who like getting shocked on purpose when there is other food available. And yes Dogwood in the area down here seems the GWS population is growing. Due to our seal and elephant seal population has increased so much. Some take it, the peace of mind that comes with the units. When someone is attacked while actually using the device at that time I'll question the effectiveness of these units.

I just ordered a couple Shark Shields and became a distributor for them through our dive shop, Red Triangle Spearfishing.  One of the units I plan on having one of our divers, Steve (Lorikay) test out in the upcoming weeks from his boat.

Steve is going to be tagging GWS and at some point I am going to ask him to turn on the Shark Shield while they are chumming and see if notices any difference in the sharks.

I spoke with one of the reps today and they gave a lot of great info on them and I am excited to try ours.

I haven't had any time to really go through all the literature but when I do, probably won't be for a couple of days, I'll try and answer some of the questions here.

Also shoot me a pm or email and if there is an answer in all of our material I'll let you know.

Thanks,
Matt

I just got back from a little trip down to Monterey area and prior to the trip my wife was reading about all the Sharks seen in Santa Cruz area and the north coast.  She told me I had to get a shark shield before I dove there.  I couldn't find any local places that had one so ended up diving without it.  My wife wasn't very happy.  I didn't tell her there are shark seen up in Mendo also but I am sure she will figure it out.

I bought one from Matt's first order so hopefully it will give my wife a little peace of mind.

I hope to never know if it deterred a shark.  I questioned the price and the built in battery, but after a little research it appears to get 300 plus full day charges OTW. It's only like $2 a day for peace of mind.  Its easier to justify as a per day cost for me.  I spend more on cell phone upgrades.  So now I just have to make sure I turn it on. Don't want to be the guy who forgot to turn it on and needed it.

July 18, 2015 A shark tipped over both our Kayaks off Trinidad Head Sunday It may have been after the Salmon we just caught. It probably was the 12 foot White that was hassling the Kayakers at Black Rock that day.

My run in with the landlord was on July 19. Apparently a day after this persons encounter. I briefly brought it up on norcalwaterhunters and someone else said they seen a large dorsal fin between prisoner and the bell. That's pretty much in the harbor.

I'm using the first gen and it seems to be working (I have not been investigated by a shark since having it)

I put the lad through a scupper hole and keep the battery unit bungee'd on the deck.
so far the problem I have with it is getting a sabiki snagged on the lead when jigging up live bait.
