I was returning to Santa Cruz last night, and saw quite a few squid boats setting up just off of Davenport, and along that stretch toward Four Mile beach. Like twenty boats!

Coupled with the warm water, I'm hoping that the presence of squid means the possibility of a white sea bass bite in coming weeks. I've only heard of a few WSB being caught here and there, but the commercial guys are pretty tight lipped when they do find the fish.

August may be a good month to keep the boat prepped and a few squid rigs in the tackle box. Gotta move fast when they show up.

Just watching closely : )
Always willing to join others in the Monterey/Santa Cruz/Half Moon Bay area for a bit of fishing...feel free to contact me.

Thanks for the heads up, Paul! The seiners have been in the area between Monterey & Dav for the last few weeks. They seem to congregate in different areas each day, so the squid are still on the move (haven't had massive spawn yet). Last night there were 4 seiners and a handful of small boats working the area right off Sand City. Full moon is next Friday...hope the water temps stay up til then!

I have a feeling this is going to be the year the WSB return in numbers. It's been about 3 years since a "Real" bite
has formed. We all got spoiled back then, but we got a few years of good salmon fishing. Seems like the tide is changing back to Sea Bass. I'm putting my money for August-September

They were there ~10 days ago when I drove by on the Sunday afternoon.  They were actually working at the time at ~3:30 in the afternoon.  There were about a dozen boats off the point just south of Davenport and another dozen at 5 mile.

BTW, also heard of reports of squid off Martin's.  And up at Pacifica this weekend, we saw murres coming up with squid and marked a lot of what looked like squid on the finder.
