Hi all,
I just got my tarpon 120. Super juiced about this. I got an anchor trolley, anchor, rod holder, fishfinder kit and paddle leash from kayak city. The angler package thing. Most of you are probably familiar with this.

Btw, I already pulled a 16" shaker out of the Delta close to my house.  :smt007

Anyway, so I can't wait to rig this baby up so I can conquer these waters. Club house leaders are:
Garmin Echomap 54dv, Lowrance Elite5 CHIRP... maybe even the 4. I think having a big screen is important while not taking up too much space or weight.  What do you guys think? They are expensive... i know..  :smt011
Another thing I'm confused about is the transducer. Which one do I need and whats the best way to mount it on the tarpon?

Any help, tips, advice is greatly apreciated.  VHF radio is also on the list.
Thanks

One other you might want to look at is the Humminbird Helix 5 DI/GPS.  I installed one on my 2015 Outback and I could not be happier!  I have done several shoot-thru-hull installs as well as in-water of these on customer boats and the results were fantastic.

oh yeah. I like that one too. To be honest I really like the CHIRP technology. But what is a shoot-thru-hull install? I've watched videos where they install the transducer in the hull. Just glued in there. Is this effective? does it work with all transponders/kayaks?

How easy is it to use a shoot through hull in the tarpon? Seems like it would be difficult to access it. Does Humminbird offer a scupper mount? I use a transducer arm for mine, but that has its drawbacks also.

I have the Helix 5 in my Tarpon,, works great. I did through hull. I have the transducer pretty much right under my seat. Very easy the access from the center hatch. I really like the unit, however I did break a prong on the power supply. I sent the unit in to Humminbird,  they fixed the unit for free.

Every time I go out, that area is crammed with gear food and water.  :smt005

Thanks. I received this kit with the angler package: http://www.austinkayak.com/products/1459/Hobie-Fishfinder-Installation-Kit.html
Can I use it with the elite 5 chirp transducer? If not does anyone know where to get good instruction on doing a waterbath install with the chirp transducer?

If it is the kit I'm thinking of, I found that the foam transducer block was not useful for anything ... Unless they changed it over the past couple years.  I haven't looked lately.

Shoot thru the hull mounting for transducers is widely used.  There are plenty of How To videos on YouTube showing the various options.  Your temp readings wont be accurate with that type of mount and there may be mimimal signal degradation from shooting through the plastic but you won't be bothered with having to clean the grass of the transducer like those of us that use the transducer deployment arms.  There are pros and cons to each of the various mounting methods.  You just have to choose the one that best suits you.  To me for freshwater fishing having the correct surface temp reading was important so I wanted my ducer in the water rather than in the hull.

Thanks RingKing,
I'm actually big on water temps too. From my experience in the delta, if the temps are right its fish on! if not, it's just haulin' catfish. I really like the idea of not dealing with the transducer though. Maybe I can find some sort of aqua-dynamic fin (like the rudder) that glides quietly next to me easly flips up.

Yes, deployment arms make for a fast easy installation as well and seem to be most popular with freshwater fishing for reasons of temp reading.  Great catch/suggestion R.K.

You most likely did not get the rudder on the 120? There are two screws on the rear of the kayak for the rudder install. You can fab an aluminum bracket and bolt on to those two screws and the ducer on the other end. Done and in the water. Just don't let it hang lower than the kayak and you won't get grass/kelp etc on it.

Thanks RacinRob. I was thinking of that too, I just wasn't sure how to get a feeling of how deep I should place it. I cant really see it once its back there. Adjusting may be a little difficult. Definitely considering it though.
Thanks
