My wife is coming with me and this is our first time to the area. What are some of the things the area offers for the non-yak fishing people to do. She will probably spend a lot of time just enjoying the fact she's not home being "mom". I'd like to let her know what's around. She might want to do some poke poling. She is not very athletic though, are there any easy and safe locations nearby? She has done some pole and snare crabbing before. Any reasonable spots to catch crab with a snare or ring trap? Thanks

North end of Shelter Cove there is a Black Sands beach, and The Avenue of The Giants is a must see; it is a few miles north of the turn off to Shelter Cove. I'm sure there tons of other things, those are just the few that we have done.

Yes the avenue of the Giants and all the redwood parks in the area are some of my favorite places to visit. My grandfather used to own some property on the Mattole River on Lighthouse rd near Petrolia. I am espicially interested in what there is to do at Shelter Cove without driving far.

Where the fish cleaning station is located there is a long pipe that extended out above the water. This is where the fish carcasses are ground up and returned to the ocean.

This is a good perch location and should be good for snaring crabs too.

Its right next to the ramp you can't miss it.

+1
Great perch fishing and some flounder on the launch side of the jetty which would be a safer area to hang out. Also I've seen some nice perch caught in cast nets thrown from the jetty. Shell and beach glass collecting along the shoreline too

Boogieboarding.  Hiking in the King Range.  Hiking along the Lost Coast.

Hanging out around the ramp in the afternoon is a very popular activity - the north winds are blocked and if the sun's out it's hot down there.  It's a great place to go in the water on either kayak or SUP or just swimming.

NO water activities are recommended up at Black Sands Beach at the north end of town - people die almost every year up there due to the very dangerous surf break and undertow.

careful on the hiking part as the locals don't like trespassers and we all know what Humboldt County is notorious for.

Hiking in the king's range is perfectly safe.  As is hiking on the coast.  And the sinkyone.  You aren't going to run in to random public land grows around there unless you are tracking a deer or doing something else way off trail.  The super bad mexican cartel public land grows are east of 101.

Don't go in the water at black sand beach.  If you do you will probably die.

my bad didn't mean to stir up anything with Humboldt County residents. always wear farmer John style wetsuit when surf smelt fishing in Northern California as the ocean too cold for my skinny build. kite flying might not be a good idea either. still stand firm on the hiking part crash everything doesn't happen east of Highway 101. Google Kings range National Guard pot grow cleanups. then do the same with matole River watershed. the power of the net

The kings range gets tens of thousands of visitors a year.  Again, stay on the roads and trails and you will be fine.  I've hiked all over those hills for 25 years and have encountered exactly zero marijuana grows.

The steep shorebreak and meat grinder boulders are what will kill you at black sands beach, not the cold.

Fly whatever kind of kite you want.  Why are you listening to an out of townerS.  There is lots of good shore fishing from the Tides Inn to the Inn of the Lost Coast.  A couple of buddys of mine both went home with 20lb lings caught at Seal Rock picnic area.
