Joel -

I currently own a fairly pimped Malibu 2XL which I am very happy with on lakes. My son sometimes fishes with me and we have developed some killer 2 man bass fishing techniques. The slow speed also helps when trolling. Next year I will probably buy a Prowler 15 for ocean fishing. Got to try and keep up with the pack better on the ocean. Don't want to be GWS bait. I am concerned with the lack of easy internal rod storage on the P15 for surf landings, but I will figure something out. Any tips on rigging P15's let me know.

Scott - here's what I've done with my P15 (I've gone through my first P15 already and I'm now on my second one) Anyway, here are some pics of my rigging (pimping :smt002).....any questions, let me know. (by the way, I'm not affiliated with any specific kayak company)

my anchor set up: Note=  no drilling required and you can set the anchor on either the bow or Stearn.

Yeah - the P15 lacks easy accessible storage - other than that, IMO: it's a nearly the perfect kayak  :smt002. It's got a little bit of speed and stability and enough deck space for pimpin. Some complain about the "wet ride" but it's easily overcome by simply wearing cut-out (seam sealed) rain pants over the wetsuit. I'd rather sit low on the water for stability and be less exposed to the wind. I had the option of getting another kayak after my first P15 - I paddled a lot of other kayaks but the P15 fit me the best. But if I were you, I'd give the Cobra Marauder and the Tarpon 160 (double hatch) a try before you decide on the P15. Anyway, if you ever need help modifying, post it on the board (or you can PM me) and I'm sure you'll get a lot more options on how to make your kayak "Fisherman Friendly"  :smt007

Thanks for the tips. I did test drive the Cobra Marauder and Tarpon 16. The Cobra was heavier and slower than the P15 but has a great layout and hatches and is super stable. The Tarpon was faster but heavier than the P15. The specs say it is only 3-4 lbs heavier but it feels like more than that when you lift them. I really wanted a yak which was easy to carry in those situations where you can't use wheels. My tandem is great but it is slow, heavy and really hard to carry more than 10 feet.

yeah, IMO: the Tarpon 160 feels more "tippy" than the P15 and does not have a lot of deck space but I do like the speed and the accessible storage.

For salmon fishing I'd take a Tarpon 160 - dual hatch (especially when launching from the beach). For General fishing, I'd take a P15. For camping and fishing = Marauder.

Just my 2 cents......

I paddled an old school Dagger Cayman for years, but now that I picked up a Tarpon 140 the dagger is lookin pretty sad & dirty from lack of use.
I absolutely love the tarpon (with the exception of the front hatch-wish it was a hardshell like the OKs have). Its a little heavier than I wanted, but its quick on the water & feels plenty stable to me. I like the flat deck in the cockpit, too.
My brother in law paddles a scupper pro TW & really likes it.

I just bought my 2nd yak, I heard copelands was going out of buissness. So I went to get some new ski boots, and came home with a Perception 12.5 Caster Fishing yak. It came with 2 seats, anchor, 2 flush mount pole holders, 1 scotty pole holder, a rudder system, and 2 utility screw hatches (6")  The first time I saw it I think the price was $825.00, then by the end of summer it was on sale for $775.00. I got it for $580.00 out the door,
I still want a Tarpon 140, but the Castor will get my son on the water with me, and a couple of other friends that want to try kayak fishing.

I have an OK Malibu II XL that my wife wanted then later lost interest in. I have no experience kayaking, and thought it was great on calm water, but found myself working hard at the Bean in October - I like the stability, though.
I'm about to cut a big old hole in the middle of the deck where the hatch goes, then rod holders, and hoping for a FF before spring.
Also lusting after the Big Game...

Had to represent and and add to the Tarpon 140 corps.
IMO, its a  little heavy and not as agile as I would like, so I got a bigger paddle and got stronger. It is functional and stable and easy to stand up in for a stretch and even casting in calm water. So far it has stood up aginst the punishment I put my boats through and I plan on purchasing another when this one is no longer sea worthy.
Prior to this boat I owned the Hobie "Quest" and loved the features. It was light, fast, and also easy to stand in. It was easy to see that alot of thought went into this boat and Id recommend it to a kinder gentler paddler than myself. Tragically I was through the hull in less than six months, but I still think everyone shopping for a boat should give it a test.
Mooch, I know you wanted this to be just about our primary kayak, but my rebellious and wordy nature forces me to go on.
After noticing that there were some that were fishing tandems, I wanted to support that side as well.
As strange as it may sound, these boats are great for fishing larger streams and creeks. We typically fish with a paddler in the back seat and the caster in the front. 2 tandems and 4 of us, makes for a great day of team fishing. Then when fishing alone, I put the, larger than milk crate, recycle bin up beyond the midway point then a ice chest above that to balance the boat and improve the tracking. I would not recommend paddling streams alone in a tandom, but to down size to a smaller more agile boat.
sorry aboat the rambling, ill shut up and just post pics.
