I'm working on my weight again. Spent too long already slacking off. Few years back I lost 180 pounds. I've gained quite a bit back. Gotta work on it.

Talking about it helps me stay focused on it. And sometimes it's nice to have results and see others get some too. It helped me last time, on a different forum. Hoping to do the same here.

My diet is pretty simple. I use www.myfitnesspal.com to figure out a basic "staple" daily meal plan. I go high on protein since it's filling. So I end up eating a lot of meat. Pork and eggs for breakfast, chicken sandwiches for lunch, steak or fish for dinner with broccoli and asparagus.

Those are my staple daily meal plans. I switch things around once in a while, changing out steamed  potatoes for broccoli, and so on.

After I stuck with the diet for a couple rough months, I found it really easy to maintain it and sustain myself on a much lower amount of food.

I paired this with running on an elliptical for 30 minutes at a gym. After a couple months of this, my endurance got back to the point where I added in weight lifting. I used AllPro http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=160947761

This strength building program allowed me to bench press 240# for 12 reps (keep in mind I've been doing heavy construction my whole life, I started at 170#. It's different for everyone)

I got down to weighing 240#, then got content. Oops.

So now I'm discontent and putting my head into this. I foresee a lot of salmon trolling in my future too.

I have a pretty set plan that worked very well for me last time, so if anyone wants some advice I can offer it. Or just offer up your own experiences if that's your thing!

Hopefully I'll have progress to report soon! it'd be nice to get back to size 30 pants again!

I go through this constantly.  Being in the Coast Guard means mandatory weigh ins twice a year.  I'm due for my spring weigh in on Wednesday.  My weight fluctuates between 260lbs on the high side and 224lbs on the low side.  If I'm not watching what I eat and not exercising I usually maintain right around 255lbs.  I've been juicing for the past 3.5 weeks and I'm down 22lbs. I know it's not the healthiest way to drop weight but I use it as a beginning step.

I'm currently sitting at 233lbs and should pass my weigh ins on body fat percentage.  Once that's over I'll start hitting the gym again.  A year ago I had gotten down to 224lbs and 17% body fat by dieting and doing cardio daily.  Then I started lifting. My weight went up nine pounds but that was from gaining muscle. It felt really good that next weigh in not having to worry abut whether or not Id pass.

Then this past November I actually felt something "pop" in the back of my head while straining during a bench press routine.  I had a crippling headache that was the worst pain Id ever felt.  I went straight to medical to get checked out.  They weren't sure what happened but we're worried that Id had an aneurism.  My blood pressure was also 40 points different between my right and left arms.  I was told to stop all work outs until I was checked out.  I had an entire series of tests with every kind of specialist doctor out there.  They never did figure out what happened.  The head aches went away after a few days but my blood pressure is still crazy.  I spent months going through tests and my weight steadily went back up.  I still haven't been cleared.

That's why I'm currently juice fasting.  Once I make weight for the Coast Guard I'll go back to eating "clean", running daily, and lifting weights.  This time I'm going to keep the weight relatively light and just do high reps.  Instead of lifting 250lbs on the bench I'll probably just limit myself to 160lbs as a max and do three sets of 15.  There's no way I want to risk the headache again!!

You'll get there!  Sounds like you're on the right track to me.  If you can,  you want 1 to 1.5 grams of protein per lb of lean body weight.  Keep your carbs low as your can and try to get those from green veggies. Fat is not evil and I don't generally worry about it as long as my carbs are low and I'm getting the required protein; seems to fall into place. Stick w the weights. Muscle burns fat.  Also, really hard to not lose some muscle when you lose weight, but it's all good cause you'll look in far better shape!  Cardio is generally good for boosting your metabolism and for being better at cardio (which is huge for us kayakers and divers) not so much for burning fat like peeps think.  I personally jog or bike a few times per week is all and best first thing in the am before you eat.

I wish you the best!  I'm not an expert, or a doctor or a bodybuilder or anything but I put in my time and read and apply what I can and have been pretty successful imho.

Hi thread.

Checking in.

I'd be interested in a maintainer's discussion. Losing the weight is simple and relatively easy compared to not putting it back on in my n=1 sample size. A little complacency + a little time = not good. Yo-yo dieting sucks.

Yeah, maintaining is rough for me too. It seems like if I'm not losing, then I'm gaining. It's a pain.

I'm holding steady at 15-20 gone so far...man it is slow going...kayak season is going to blur the true numbers a bit as 3 days loading gear and fishing with no ice cream stores otw...makes it easy to keep or lose...lifting weight s during the week now
veggie veggie veggie get your veggie drinks...(sung like those old spelling cartoons)

Ryan an ongoing non-specific member weight thread would be fun and motivating and good weekday reads

You would not believe how many folks- who I did not know before-chimed in a lot or came up to me at o'neil forebay , and talked about juice/diet/healthy eating changes-struggles with weight gains - career changes -life style changes....a lot of ncka's in the 30 and over group have dealing with this stuff.

so far I have lost one large 15 lb ling cod...and need to still lose the 50 lb bag of concrete that I am going to carry around all day today with me--mental perspective, tricks I play with myself to start to see the weight as worthless shit that is heavy and losable ,and in my day all day

I can always tell when I don't get out to surf fish.  Almost always gain back the weight I lost, pounding the beach.  I usually lose 10-15 pds just by putting in miles while fishing.

In fact, I'm getting motivated to try and lose some by going fishing right now.  Havnt been out in a while bc of the poor fishing reports.

Don't eat fast food or drink soda. Worried about time, find yourself a quick sit down Mexican restaurant and order one taco and a few fried jalapenos. Limit yourself to one round of chips and salsa. Eat the chips and salsa and by the time your one taco gets there you shouldn't be ravenous any more and the taco should fill you up and the capsaicin from the jalapenos will fill you up, increase blood flow and "help" with digestion. Drink iced tea, no sugar, or water.

I focused on not eating after I was no longer hungry as opposed to full. Eating until full is one of the biggest mistakes you can make. Over eating is the worst addiction in my opinion. I used to be able to pound a double western bacon cheeseburger, spicy chicken sandwich, criss-cuts, fried zucchini and wash it all down with a large dr. Pepper. That shit will make my guts hurt so bad now if I eat a quarter of that, not to mention the shits and a headache from the grease.

Pack a lunch instead of buying a lunch. It's like quitting smoking; just don't but a pack, or just don't buy a snack. It's hard as hell, and I'm still a bit overweight and struggle now and then, but once your body is in tune with eating correctly, you can have a little bit of that pleasure food occasionally, but you better watch it, cause it'll creep back.

Or just count your calories and track in my fitness pal, then if you want a beer or cheesecake or whatever and you have calories left and IIFIYM then go ahead.

The don't eat this eat that advice is usually crap.  Try to hit your protein goals, 1.0g/lb LBM is plenty for most.  Eat fewer calories than you expend.  Lose weight.  That simple.

Good info guys.

My weight has been controlled by cutting down on carbs, sodas and diving a lot.  I am sure I could do better but I am not going to count calories or go on a diet.  Eventually I will reduce carbs more but you can't just cut them out.  Your body will crave them.

Good luck to all.  Health can be a choice that will change your life or at least possibly give you more time on earth.

It's been the best and I have a lot of upper body injuries.  I can t use my arms very well but I kick with fins all day long.  And it relieves pressure on my neck and pain goes away while in the water and lasts for a couple hours afterwards.

Not sure who told me to try swimming but grateful I was told how it helps and glad I gave it a try.

Wow great thread!  I myself have weighed in at my most highest ever recently at 242 lbs.  i got out of the Marine Corps August of 2013 and had gained over 50 lbs in a little over a years time.  Ive been wanting to get back at it and a thread like this, I think,  would aid greatly in the process.
