"Fuzie estimated it would cost about $250,000 a year to get a lifeguard and a back-up lifeguard on duty for four days a week."

Kinda cheddar lifeguards making nowadays?  And that's only for part time coverage, geez

They're probably factoring in ancillary costs associated with stationing a lifeguard there (but yes I agree it's a ridiculously exorbitant amount).

Not as dangerous, but still worthy of a mention for folks not super familiar with the area is Carmel River State Beach to the north...

I've taken my family there to play but always keep a VERY close eye on them...the beach is steep and the waves can be deceptive and powerful right at shore....

Sincerely,

Jim

I did my last 2 checkout dives there in 1985, got my ass kicked by the shore break coming in.

I had a close call there once too.  That beach is no joke.

Sad story...

But, yeah that price must include the overall cost of two lifeguards... including benefits, equipment, certifications, and salary.

Even if they posted signs every 5 feet and had a ranger warning everyone that stepped foot on the beach, I think these things would still happen.  Dangerous areas are just dangerous.

Still super sad... and kudos to the guys that tried to save them...

you also have to add in the liability insurance, workers comp costs, it all adds up

I taught Scuba Classes there, dives 7&8 for the proficient student. We had 2 dive pairs per dive master, one dive master on a paddle board and 5 on the beach  geared up as rescue divers if there was any sort of surf action.  Did that from 80 to 86

Doesn't add up that much!  You'd need an electron microscope to gauge the state's incremental cost of insurance for one part time employee and one backup (whatever the eff that means).

Starting pay = $14.91/hour
http://www.parks.ca.gov/pages/736/files/TryOutOcean2015.pdf

I'm not saying that, generally, there would be no incremental cost to posting a LG at mortuary.  Nor am I saying Cal State should.  Allz i'm sayin dude prolly talking off the cuff and likely retrieved 250K fig from his cloaca.  It can NOT be 250K unless he's considering CAPEX, like swank-ass facilities
