This year, I haven been out twice in SC for dungeness crab and sand dab. Both trips skunked. I also lost one crab pot (snagged, cannot pull it out). Maybe I will try Moss Landing next time. Any suggestion where should I drop the crab pot, and where should I go for sand dab? Don't want to skunk 3 times in a row :-)

Haven't heard of any crabs from the Moss Landing area myself.

I believe there are a few spots for dabs.  I normally go to Monterey for dabs but latest intel (yesterday) says the dabs aren't there in great size/numbers right now .... or they just didn't paddle far enough. :smt002

How about sand dab?

There are lots of post on Sand Dabs on the website. I would launch at the coast guard station in Monterey and go out past 100 ft.,  drop a sabiki tipped with some squid. You should load up pretty fast if they are in the area.

Monterey is like Sand Dab capital of the world. However, I would wait a bit...since like...well you know....a GWS is cruising around.   :smt002

Thank you guys for the advice.  Any chance for doing crab/sand dab combo? I saw some of facebook posts of party boat crab/dabs combo trip at Monterey Bay. They did catch some crabs last Sunday. Do you know where they usually drop the pots?

Dungies are deeeep in Mbay. There are many theories why...but either way, boaters get em in 200-250FOW. That's too much rope for a kayak.

If u want to get dabs in monterey or moss,  try fishing deep water.  like 150-250 ft.  Moss has bigger dabs than monterey.  You can drop crab traps about a mile out along the canyon wall.  It's also a good spot for the dabs.  The flats off pajaro are good for both too.  The crabbin is starting to pick up but lots of females.

I used google earth to find the areas to fish when I first started. You can really pinpoint the canyon walls.  They create upwelling and the dabs will stack up.

My favorite dab spot is in 250-300 ft of water about 2.5 miles almost straight out of the harbor. I also crab in the same area.  I'm usually on my boat though.  It's a long haul in a yak but I've seen em out there.

Here is a pic of some dabs on my ff.  if you notice, they are suspended about 75 ft off the bottom.  I've had em suspended as shallow as 100 ft in 250 ft of water.

And yes it is a lot of work to fish that deep.  But well worth it.

Now I'm gonna have to make time for a trip.

Anybody available Friday for a boat ride?

Pablito,
Great pic.
Better work out those forearms for next time.  I was pooped and it wasn't even red hot.

There is no max hooks for dabs or macks.  As long as yoy don't have any rock cod or salmon aboard, you can fish as many as your heart desires.
