Seeing a gas while out there is like my worst fear.. hearing stories of them in the same place as I go sure doesn't help the nerves  :smt009 I don't know how you stayed calm.... I would've been makin some yellow water  :smt003
Give a man a fish and he'll eat a day. Teach a man to fish and he'll sit on the water all day with a stick in his hand and no fish.

No Bueno Pete  :smt009

You think he saw you and wasn't interested?

Bet that suit was a tad bit Stinkier  :smt003

Woohoo! Account is working again!

One quick correction;  it happened on Monday, not Sunday. A guy in the NorCal Skindiver Club supposedly saw one on Sunday.

To answer your question, I'm 100% sure it scoped me out for a while because when I saw it, the Shark had  pretty much cruised past me. What really freaks me out is the thought that it probably passed within a few feet of me as I was descending or leveling out at the bottom and I didn't even notice it for a while.

The only comfort is knowing that it saw me and decided not to pursue. I guess it's true that the big ones know what people are and don't care about them.

Glad it worked put for the best. Thanks for sharing!

On a sidenote from a non-diver, what does that kind of sighting do to your breath holding? I mean, I'm sure you get an instant spike in blood pressure and adrenaline... is it just on more thing that you're calculating as you're fighting off the panic or is it just so ingrained to relax underwater that you just not even think about it?

If it's too much to answer, I understand,  I'm just curious as I've never dove (dived?).

You more or less have it correct. The adrenaline causes your heart rate to speed up which will cut your dive time. Good divers can sometimes calm down their heart rates in panic moments so they use less of the oxygen from their breath. It's mostly a mental thing.

Apparently she's been saying "Hi" to a lot of divers.

I was diving Carmel Monday also but had sea lions around me most of the time. I wonder if the vis helped in deterring an attack. Hopefully your percentage rate of seeing another one has drastically gone down. Check this one off your bucket list brother.

Something to tell your grandchildren. Better than my seven gill encounter  :smt001
But I'm good with it  :smt002

Antonio

BTW the spot that I dove is reachable as a shore dive and I was considering it for the next dive. This kind of put a kibosh on that since there's a bit of comfort knowing that I have a T15 waiting for me on the surface. A Banks Board doesn't provide that  :smt009

Might be the same one that buzzed a couple surfers at Moss Beach last week, too . . . .

Moss beach is a bit far, and I feel like there's a local population in that area. Hasn't kept me off the water though :)

There's a Moss beach in Pebble too...between Asilomar & Pt Joe.

The scariest part of your story, Pete, while I was imagining it...was the fact it was above you...meaning you had to keep holding your breath before kicking to the surface. Then swim to your yak. Just thinking about it made me pee a little.

YIKES.
Its bad enough to have an encounter while aboard a kayak, I can't even think how it would feel to be in the water. DOUBLE YIKES.

good on ya for keeping your head together, and thanks to the fish for a drive-by rather than interaction.

At that point, I clung to the canyon wall and waited for it to pass. The shark was moving really slowly and casually, so before it was out of sight, I made my move and swam up and away from it.

Wow, good you were able to do this!

My PB partner thinks I'm crazy, going out in a yak off our coast here. He said that they were tagging them in our area. They Tagged about 14, and there were about the same number that they were not able to tag. I'm glad to hear their numbers are up. Maybe we will have less fur-bags soon. I'm just going to use my shark shield more often.
