We rely on these pieces of plastic. I say that kayak is a goner. I would recycle it into something that won't put someone in danger.
Bummer, but that is severe damage. I would never be able to relax and focus while paddling it, even if it was repaired.

Exactly. I get nervous on my old prowlee everytime I hit the ocean, even though it is repaired. It really is just a matter of time.

Hard spot to access and will be below or right at the waterline if he takes that out in the ocean he's then relying on others to save his butt maybe try and patch and use for a play boat in freshwater but even then its gonna end "un fun"

I would have to agree with some of the later posts in this thread. For safety reasons, I think this kayak is done. If he were to repair the boat, I wouldn't have any confidence in it any longer.  That's too bad.

Even with my long winded repair strategy, I would NEVER trust it, but it would still be fun to try and repair, if you have the ambition to try it,

Another bad/good idea, if he has homeowner policy, leave it where it could easily be burgled, collect the insurance then let Darwinism take care of the thief.

As much as I love a good DIY kayak project, I'd say this one belongs in the recycle bin.

This is from an old topic on kayak repair.

http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=48908.msg567488#msg567488

Great tutorial. Could come in handy some day. We have plastic items at work and the need to repair them has come up before. I am going to show them this and some other links I looked up on different welders and welding rods. While I was looking I found this PDF that has helpful info and tips on doing plastic welding. It is related to a high end professional system but I think a lot of the info applies here as well.

Drill the cracks where they end. Fill the body with expanding foam and epoxy resin and fiber the outside. It will be unsinkable after that. Or kayak connection in Santa Cruz has trident 15's for 600$
I only fish on days that end with Y

I think that expanding foam soaks water, I wouldnt use it

Patch it, then coat it in epoxy, then use spray-on bedliner. That would fix it.

If i had very little cash and still wanted to paddle this kayak i would....

open up those big hatches and seal the cracked scuppers with trident rescue tape as best as you can.
stretch and zip tie that shit on. Its good stuff.

with this type of repair youre going to lose storage but youll have a kayak to paddle.

I would then partition off both ends of the kayaks damage using a cut up boogie (body) board (basically a cheap source for closed cell foam) or pieces of 1-1/8" tumbling mat. (another closed cell foam) using a contour duplication gauge you can lay out a perfect pattern that will fit into the kayak very snug for both partitions. get some 2" panhead ss screws. these will hold the partitions in place. once the partions are fitted, from the outside drill, goop and screw the partitions down to hold in place.

goop around the partitions to seal the gaps (get it in there)

let that shit dry.

then go here: http://www.aeromarineproducts.com/boat-foam.htm
They can hook you up with expanding boat foam. This isnt the crap in the can that you get at home depot which soaks up water. this is 2 part pourable closed cell foam that they use in boats, docks and surprisingly kayaks. but its all in the prep. you need to seal off the space and figure out the cubic inches and make a purge hole somewhere. I figure with that big hatch you dont need to hole saw a pour hole. just open the hatch and dump it in. close it and wait till it purges. being a 2 part it will cure even sealed up.

the kayak will be a little heavier but you said he was young...

Scuppers not only drain water from the kayak, they also serve as structural elements, supporting the deck. As such, they will flex slightly whenever you sit on or get off the kayak. This flexing makes repairing scuppers extremely tricky.

Another problem is the slickness of HDPE, not many materials will stick to it. Goop and fiberglass will slowly loose their adhesion with repeated flexing of the bonding area. I have seen goop and fiberglass repairs fail. The only sure way to repair HDPE is with plastic welding with HDPE patch and welding rods.

That kayak is beyond repair.  Tell your buddy not to pass it along to a noob kayaker who does not have any experience repairing HDPE kayaks. Bad karma. Best bet is to salvage  parts from the kayak, such as the hatches, seat, foot pegs, handles, rod holders, anchor setup. Those parts can be safely sold on craigslist. Then recycle the kayak.
