My Friend is on a budget and working his last summer here at the wharf 2 monterey fish Co. before going off to college in Humbolt this fall ....great kid

Saved and pinched early this year and got himself a used all rigged out "It's a Malibu xfactor about 13.5ft long, yellow"

it was a big kayak and he was very excited to have his own and not be borrowing my extra one whenever he wanted to go ling fishing.
He took it out with me twice to deep water and beach launches and never had any big leaks really or see cracks appear.
Then work and saving money for a truck took over and it sat in his parents back yard.
When his brother took it to the Salinas river late in summer to try for duck they had a real situation and the kayak sunk.
They dragged it out of the muck and home, discovered what at the time he told me he thought was vandalism chunks hacked into the scupper holes.
I have not heard more on what might have really happened.
Yesterday when I went to buy some sand dab bait he was working the fish market counter and asked me if it was fixable-I told him to send me pics and I would check on here for that era malibu solutions and materials...and folks with any advice.
I did try typing different terms into our search bar on the this site- not much returns other than a 2005 'use plastic welding rods thread'
My cobra can be melted and joined or plugged with cobra material and melted and smoothed....malibu looks like harder plastic....I thought about heavy duty plastic or fiber-plastics and embedding zip ties while it was still wet ,inside around the scupper post

Now - last night he sent me these pictures  :smt010 , and now as sad as it is to say -I believe this kayak may need to be re-purposed or destroyed to prevent a serious failure and danger to anyone...
any ideas would be great----looks like the kayak was crushed to me
BTW I have not seen the damage in person yet but he did tell me there are 3 scupper holes with damage and two are under where he sits and one around the knee area

it looks old and brittle so maybe not worth saving it.
do all the work only to find it is failing in new spots---or-----it WAS crushed and once fixed would work as a back up yak or beater yak....we talked about goo and zip ties from inside and cutting a new hatch cover into the top back-so we could get the cut out cookie for welding the outside after the inside goop jobs are secure and glued on

It's extremely thin there, where it should be 3/16" thick.      It was obviously a defect ( blem ) from the factory.

You could try a patch, might be ok for shallow water access,  but I wouldn't advise taking it on the ocean.

Recycle it.     You can get a new blem for about 500

That's crazy I wonder if a scupper cart was involved.

Send the pics to Malibu. Then if they won't help in any way, toss it. I was wondering about the scupper kayak cart theory as well.

looks like scupper cart damage to me....I would clean it well and apply tape inside or out. Then use GOOP of several layers to build it up. The once dry i would do the other side of the crack with more GOOP.
One could even seal off the scuppers top n bottom completely and eliminate them from water contact. There are probly more scuppers to get the water out. That and a cup or sponge to bail it out on top.

folks mentioned the dolly cart in the holes deal so I'll ask today..but for reals I think he said he thought someone did something while it was in yard for months..no truck tire marks?
no downed tree limbs?
no one used it...maybe his buddies broke it and he did not know..interesting idea about the scupper cart..let me find out today...

either way never gonna be a big ocean kayak again..maybe a ton of some compound could plug and strengthen it enough for small lakes or smash up derbi days

You might be able to plug the scupper hole from the deck side, tape the inside of the hull around the cracks for a backing with duct tape, then fill the scupper hole solid with some molten plastic of the same material the kayak is made of.  The kayak would be minus 3 holes, but it would still work fine I would think.

I would build it up with a product called solar-ez. My prowler 15 is about 85% of this product now!! Great stuff, uv activated and sets in a few minutes in sunlight. Easy to build it up. Sealing off the scuppers on the bottom would be ideal too. Get some sheetrock mesh,  and use a putty knife to butter the gel over the mesh and also to surrounding plastic. (All this in the shade of the garage) then take ckear packaging tape and tape the repair, take into sunlight,  and remove tape in a few minutes. Then fill the remaining scupper hole and let cure. Mesh the top as same as bottom, apply gel, tape, cure,  and you're done! EZ peezie.

what do folks do with a kayak when it is time to put it to rest?

On the CCKF forum there is a thread started by a guy named Pighunter who cut up a boat with a skill saw that was cracked on a couple of edges. It's easy on CCKF forum to do a search for the article.

Just an idea,
its Saturday morning and I'm waiting to pickup the GF at the airport,
so what the heck the mind is wandering,

get the largest diameter PVC pipe that will fit thru the scupper, get a couple of threaded flanges something like this http://www.pvcfittingsonline.com/855-005-1-2-schedule-80-pvc-van-stone-flange.html?gclid=CI7ay4z64cMCFYOSfgodgg0AoA

Cut and thread the pipe (or look in the plastic conduit section for a threaded nipple) so that u can screw a flange on top and bottom, may need to trim and shape the flanges, if possible, use the screw holes/SS screws in the flanges to "gently" hold the flange to the hull, this ought to add some integrity to the hull around the scupper if the plastic isn't too brittle.

Once all the pieces fit the way u want them, dissasemble, clean the hull around the repair as good as you can with solvents and sand paper, goop the whole mess with an adhesive caulking and put it all together.  I'd use Lexel  I've had good luck with it sticking to polyethylene, and it remains somewhat flexible, should be able to find it in any good hardware dept. http://www.amazon.com/Sashco-13013-2-Lexel-5-0-Ounce-Clear/dp/B0012DIUYW/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1423935203&sr=8-2&keywords=lexel+caulk

If there are still cracks extending from the flange then use a little mesh and Lexel to seal.  I might even use some very small screws to hold the patch in place to provide a positive connection to the hull in case the adhesion fails.  OF COURSE, every hole, even a tiny one weakens the hull and provides a place for another crack to start.  It's a toss up.

Disclaimer, And depending on how the hull flexes it could tear all this stuff loose, or cause more cracks, ETC.

Using the PVC pipe will give u at least a small opening so the scupper fill still be functional.

Stuff the hull with noodles, (or as much scrap styrofoam as you can find)

Test drive,  and if you do this crazy repair, post up the results.  I thought about this to repair a hull I had but the "lifetime guarantee was real and Cobra replaced it so I never tried it.
