Find what you like, just about anything will catch rockfish !!!!! I take a ton of tackle out and end up using 1-2 lures.
20 lb leader is a good idea for just starting out. That is even hard to break off if you, no when you get snagged.

Yeah, 50# is pretty hard to break off.  If just starting out, 25lb topshot or max main line IMHO.  Also important is llearning how to properly break off a snag while in a kayak.
