I've only fished for these from a party boat; never a from a yak. So I have 3 questions...

1. What kind of rod should I use?

2. What size line?

3. What about tackle?

Recently, my most common setup is a 3-6oz jighead with 5-9" swimbait. I use a variety.. Big Hammer, Branson, 831 Tackle. All good IMO. Line, it's common to use anything between 20 to 50# braid with a couple foot leader of 20# to 30#.

Sometimes I use a 3 way rig. One ring tied to mainline, bottom one tied to a foot to two foot tied to a 3-6oz torpedo weight, third ring tied to 12-24" leader with a sliding hook and treble at the end for holding frozen squid.

I use the jigging setup most often though. Can't wait for Ling/Rock season to open!

The Search feature is your friend.  This topic is usually brought up several times a year, so you'll find a plethora of threads covering the fine intricacies and nuances of the art of rockfishing  :smt003.

For what it's worth, a $20 WalMart spinning combo loaded with 30 pound mono got me through at least a few dozen rockfish trips spread over four years before the reel fell apart.

Ok, well let's narrow this down then... Do you want to use light or heavy tackle. Looking for lots of rockfish,  or targeting big lings...?

Get a cheap Walmart combo special and go fishing. While you are out fishing, check out what other people have. Just start cheap, you will spend a small fortune o. This hobby soon enough.

When you click on the "Search" icon, it'll take you to a page where you can enter your search query.  But below that, you'll see something that says "Choose a board to search in, or search all".  Click on the "+" sign next to that.  Below the "+" sign is a checked box that says "Check all".  Click on the check to un-check that box, then click on the "+" sign above it.  Then only put a check mark next to "General Fishing Tips".  This will narrow down all your searches to only the "General Fishing Tips" board, which is where you'll find all the info you need.

I simply typed in "rockfish" and several helpful threads came up.  Happy reading!

Just do what you did on the party boat with the same gear.

Yes, a pfd is on my short list.

About a 7' rod and 50# line. Thank you.

I have a dozen rods and reels. It depends on where I'm going and what I'm fishing for and how I'm fishing.

But...

Just now starting to think about ocean yak fishing.

Find what you like, just about anything will catch rockfish !!!!! I take a ton of tackle out and end up using 1-2 lures.
20 lb leader is a good idea for just starting out. That is even hard to break off if you, no when you get snagged.
