Now I'm confused Chris. 😫
Anytime Rob.  Glad I could help spread the confusion  :smt003.

Looking back at what I wrote, pictures and ClipArt arrows would've been better.

So can you explain all your setups to me for Almanor and pre plan a trip with good weather sometime when you know the fish will be biting? ;-)

If you want to try everything in the book then do so - it'll all work at one time or another.  Guys have even caught lings on silverware, Barbie dolls...etc.

If you want to fish in a manner that catches plenty of rockfish and lingcod and can also get you onto more of a big game fish in a salmon, halibut or thresher, then learn a good bait presentation.

I prefer swimming choves and herring to anything else, and it's caught me thresher, halibut, salmon and more big rockfish and lingcod than I can count.

Pac halibut - herring, 25 pound leader, barbless hooks.
Thresher - herring, 20 pound leader, barbless hooks.
Lots of salmon.
Lots of rockfish - usually big ones since it's on average a 9" herring.
More lingcod than anything else.

An Uglystik in Medium-Light or Medium-Heavy is all you need, and a Penn with smooth drag will catch anything we're fishing for along the nearshore California coastline.  The bottom line is having gear that's ready for action and a net that can get the job done.

Happy hunting.   :smt001

Eric, right on cue to remind you to get a bigger net than you think you will need.

Go out with someone, borrow there gear, if you like it see if he'll sell it to you
My biggest worry is that my wife(when I'm dead)will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it

Yes, a pfd is on my short list.
Should be top of the list!

I use a ugly stick with a cheap okuma clarion reel spooled with 30lb power pro.  I've been beating the shit outta this reel and it keeps on tickin.  drag still nice and smooth. I'll get something nicer when it dies.  I mostly target lings and rf when out on the ocean. Point is, You don't need to spend a fortune to have fun landing fatty lings!  They bite most anything. Handful of different colored BigHammers and 4 oz lead jigheads are pretty reliable.

I also use a cheap Shimano spin reel on an Ugly Stik with 20 lb mono for shallow water that's worked pretty good for me.

Get a good life jacket with some storage options, a good radio, compass and get confident in ur self rescue skills.

Oh dear, i'm so embarrassed for that fish.
Three-fourths of the Earth's surface is water, and one-fourth is land. It is quite clear that the good Lord intended us to spend triple the amount of time fishing as taking care of the lawn.
