If we put a hobie outback against a hobie revolution in the same test, which would win? Would they be the same since they have the same drive system?

With guys pedaling the same cadence they should be the same.
My point was this 'tug of war' test wasn't really useful to demonstrate which drive is better since no one uses their kayaks to play tug of war.

Cool vid.  Let's see a version where it's broken mirage drive vs. broken paddle.   :smt003

That would actually be pretty interesting to see. The drive is still somewhat functional depending on the type of failure.
Either way I wouldn't want to limp back very far with only half a paddle or a broken drive.

Gee let's race in reverse the propel vs. the hobie......oh wait the hobie won't do that....
Don't knock it until you've used it. They both serve a purpose and both are good at it
The video is useless unless one of you wants to start a Kayak Drag Racing circuit!!! :smt005

Peddle boat drag racing circuit. Neither boat in the vid are by
definition a kayak.

Of course they are.  All you have to do is strap a double bladed paddle on either one, and boom it's a kayak.  :smt003

I think the peddlers should have switched crafts for round two....

It wouldn't have mattered.

I have no skin in this one, never owned a hobie or native.

I just rewatched it......propel guy could have at least looked like he was trying.  I think the hobie would still win but.....What a crappy video, just makes the dealer that arranged it look like an ass.

..........agarcia is just an ex-kayaker

Exactly! Let the slacker do his thing on the Hobie as well and see if there is any difference.

That demonstration means about as much to me as...well, this video. I'd still rather have the Chevy.

I know this isn't propel or mirage but thought it was cool. Crazy tandem peddled hydrofoil.

Not hobie's fault. That's a local hobie dealer who made the video.  Still, bad form since as posted above, how many people are sprinting all the time?  Lets race a trident 13 vs say, a Santa Cruz kayak and see who wins...

Better yet race both these boats against a Revo 13 over a 5 mile distance. The difference in effort and finish times will be huge. There is a reason why bicycles are propelled with the leg muscles and not with hand cranks.

The problem with the prop is that it has the same pitch and is designed for the average user to move the water without too much turbulence and the Hobie Mirage drive does not have this design shortcoming. The only advantage of the propeller design is in being able to pedal backwards.

What kayak uses a hand crank?  I believe both use leg power unless someone isn't using theirs correctly. :smt005
