No surprise there!  The small propeller is just no match for the powerful Hobie Mirage Fins.

Looks like another Hobie promo. The mirage drive does generate a lot of torque in that the flippers have a large surface area to push against water. If a large enough prop could be fitted on a Native propel drive to equalize the surface area of the Mirage drive would the results be the same? To run a more accurate test the same motor, meaning the same person would be used in each craft. Two different individuals with different degrees of leg power will give different results.

Cool vid.  Let's see a version where it's broken mirage drive vs. broken paddle.   :smt003

I think the peddlers should have switched crafts for round two....

It wouldn't have mattered.

Wtf? Hahaha, what is this supposed to prove? The only possible inkling of any type of useful information that this could point to is that a mirage drive can possibly produce a better "hole shot" (auto correct put "hole shit", which actually,  does fit the bill as well).

So,  yes, if you're interested in drag racing your craft for short periods of time,  by all means,  equip yourself with a mirage drive. This doesn't prove anything as far as cruising speed goes or anything else. There are many jet boats that have a greater top speed than a screw,  but the screw has a better take off performance. You lost some cool points Hobie.

I don't care anyways,  I prefer a kayak over a peddle boat in the first place.

Not hobie's fault. That's a local hobie dealer who made the video.  Still, bad form since as posted above, how many people are sprinting all the time?  Lets race a trident 13 vs say, a Santa Cruz kayak and see who wins...

Other than the ability to go backwards, is there any aspect in which the propel drive out performs the mirage drive?  I think not.

It's the kayak, not the drive. And yes, propel drives are easier to pedal at a consistent cadence all day, at least for me.

After 5 years of being in a hobie, and 1 year in natives, its less tiring and less stressful on my knees to maintain 2-3mph consistent trolling speed.

There are definitely knocks on the propel kayaks, but it's not like hobie Is perfect either.  Native doesn't have the R&D budget of hobie, but it's constantly trying to improve and maybe someday will get there.

Also, a slayer propel doesn't compare against a hobie Revolution, it's more equivalent to a hobie outback or PA 12.  You can stand up and fish in them, they're more comfortable, wider, etc.

Putting a native slayer propel 10 attached to a hobie outback in a speed or tug of war test isn't even a close comparison.  The propel 10 is slower off the blocks, wider and less efficient than a propel 13.

Pretty sure if Native had a narrow 16 foot hull to drop a Propel drive in it would have the equivalent speed of an Adventure or new Revo 16 with more energy efficiency over distance. One benefit of the Mirage drive, particularly in narrow hulls, is keeping a lower center of gravity for the weight of legs. Full revolution cranks raise legs higher above the hull making a narrow hull a bit less stable.

It was drive against drive. Going a few feet. Hull width has nothing to do with a simple tug off. Don't give this silly vid any deep meaning dude. Just relinquish your propeller and come back to the darkside.  :smt044
