Well.  I'm looking for a casting rod.   I just got back from dicks sporting good and planned on a ugly stick lite in heavy.   In the corner I saw a Trevala.   It was 7' med-light.  The line is rated 20-50lb I beleive.

They did not have a medium for me to compare.  However the specs on a medium power is 30-80weight.

After having the rod in my hand compared to the ugly stick.  I decided on the Trevala.  I normally use cheapie rods.  My only decent on is a 9,6' lamiglas I use for surf perch and trout.  I do care for that rod and love it compared to the cheapies.

So my delema is.  Should I go with a medium or medium- lite Trevala?

This will be my main rod matched with a Shimano tr100 reel with 40lb braid.   It will be used for rockfish, lings, and flatfish.  I would not mind hooking wsb and salmon either.

Any advice would be appreciated.  Especially ones that have the same rod.

Any reasons behind med vs med-light.  I like the face that the ml is 7' vs the med is 6.6'.   Compares to the uglystick lite heavy.  The Trevala ML  felt like it had the same backbone.   Just in a smaller diameter blank.

I have the Medium, and a 10# Ling gives me a good fight. I find 6'6 plenty for my kayak (13').

The medium has a little more backbone so when your working lures it wont feel like your rod is gonna snap.I actually perfer the shorter rod for fishing for bottom fish or off a kayak/boat.your not gonna be doing any hard swing casting.your most likely gonna drop it straight down or lobing your jig and bouncing it off the bottom.also when you get a good size fish you'll have more power in the rod to get some control of it.my ideal setup would be a medium heavy 63 paired with a baitcaster with 50#powerpro.

+1

I've got both 7' ML and 6.6' M.  I prefer the action and power of the medium for RCG and Lings.

I have the medium and I have to lean forward to get the line around the bow (15' yak) but it's pretty minor and I also like the shorter rod for jigging. I have it paired with an avet sxj with 30# braid and I love fishing that set-up but I would also consider the med-heavy for reasons Dune12 mentioned as well as you can jig heavy lures (8oz+) if the drift is really fast and/or you are targeting bigger fish.

I've got an ML, and it is now my go to rod for everything, literally. I have a MH, and have an M but it just sits.
I've got flatties, lots and lots of sturgeon, rockfish, salmon, stripers, etc on that rod. Mine is paired with a daiwa Luna and 50# braid.
It seems like it doesn't have enough backbone, but it does, enough to deal with a big sturgeon even....that's the ML in my avatar ( though that sturgeon barely was a keeper)

I loved the ML until I slammed it in two with my camper shell door. I've caught everything around here with it from Montezuma sturgeon to big lings. I really liked it for 2-3oz. butterfly type jigs.
I do like a M weight for larger swimbaits .....
I am trying to build a similar ML blank as a replacement now.
I'm surprised that the ML never broke from all the torque breaking 40# spectra on snagged jigs.

Seems like half of you think the ML is fine for rockfishng.  I wish I can test both rods at the store.  It's just odd to spend a hundred dollars and not know if it's something is like.

Both M(6'6) and ML (7') are awesome rods. I use both, bUT 90% of the time just use the ML for Everything too. Seriously,  I'm not worrying about that rod backed with 65/50lb. Braid being broken by Anyfish! I appreciate a great fight on light gear. The ML works just fine for me with 2-4oz lead heads and swim baits and trolling for salmon, and jigging deep water for Macks in deep water lakes. It's a great rod to use for many types of fishing situations

For ocean I like the mh models. Immediate lifting power on big lingcod close to the bottom. I fished the ml and disliked it.

I use a ml with a Abu 6500 I prefer to have more fight vs meat on the clip. I am on a freezer filling mission then I break it the my with an avet. I have never felt out gunned with the ml. Oh and the 50lb wsb in my avatar was on the ml
