KICKIN BASS

I use to sell guns at a sporting good store.  I sold ALOT of 30-06, 308's, .270's and 7mm.  I also have a 7mm and by the time I have shot 6 rounds at the range I'm hurtin.  I bought it for out of state hunting, and have yet to go?  I bought the Ruger Stainless Steel .270 with a Nikon Scope, and I have been real happy.  The gun is lite to carry, rugged, and most important, it looks good...  It has very little kick, and I have shot 3 hogs, and one deer this year.  All died fast.  Between 30-06 and .270 its kinda like Ford or Chevy....  six to one ....half a dozen to the other.

Gotta love those Rugers! Where were you for the pig feed at Bam II? Is there any hogs on the Hunting area around Lake Mendo? I know there are Turkeys. Randall

That's country living folks. Right off the land and sea. Doesn't it make you wanna move further up north! Way to go Jelly and congrats on the Hog. Nothing is better than going into the winter with a freezer full of wild game and fish

I own one gun for everything--Remington 700 30-06. I keep a bow for the little stuff

Suweeet pig Jelly!!!  Remind me to tell you the story of the old cowboy that fell off his horse and broke his back.  They found his skeleton completely cleaned by wild pigs.  Even the wood on his pocket knife was chewed on.  Those wild pigs are no joke.

Way to go Jelly! I'm jealous. I used to hunt them with a bow and miss it.
You're hooked now...

Hey Jelly... CONGRATS... nice hog!

KB... that was awfully nice of you to take Jelly out and put him on game.  That's an experience a young sportsman will cherish for a lifetime.

I shoot a .270 and have taken deer and elk with it.  It's a nice flat shooting caliber.  I'm still look forward to baggin' my first hog with it.  Finding a good place to hunt pigs isn't easy unless you know someone.

Way to feed the family Chris. How did you like gutting it? Not like cleaning a fish.

The caliber you're shooting is only half of what makes for viscious recoil, the other half is how much your gun weighs, as well as what type of rifle it is.  I can shoot a heavy, semi-auto, 30-06 garand all day with no shoulder problems - but a lightweight bolt action can hurt you even in a relatively dinky caliber.  A long (heavier) mosin-nagant is much nicer to shoot than the short later year models, for instance - dispite both shooting 7.62x54r.

Also keep in mind that shorter, lighter rifles are less stable inertially, and therefore less accurate when fired without a rest.  Getting the long bull-barreled version of a rifle will make it more accurate AND make it kick less.  You won't even remember the recoil of a rifle in the field, but at the range you can use recoil pads, shoulder padding, or (my favorite on the bench) put a sandbag between your shoulder and the rifle.

A lot of collectors swear by 6.5x55 as the ultimate deer hunting caliber.  Swedish mousers in that caliber generally beat the 30-06 and 7x57 families in mil-surp match tournaments.

The garand is gas operated and significantly reduces the recoil.

Anyway Jelly give us the story of the stalk and the shot!!!!
