It was actually a little more like a beat down and taking fish back.....long long history here. I know the family involved, not condoning what they did, but there is more to it. I was able to dive Molokai last Feb with no problems and was even taken out by locals with a Haole in tow!  :smt003

I know no one ones the Ocean, but allegedly....Dr. Wong brings groups of divers to Molokai waters, slays tons of fish and brings them back to Oahu. I didn't see it first hand but I know the locals feel much different about their waters than we do here.

We shared any fish shot with locals and took orders even before we hopped in.  Going back again soon, anyone wanna join??

That sounds like some small town bs. This same type of thing has been happening all over the world for centuries. But this idea of creating locals-only reserves is absurd.
From the article: ""Ritte says they are trying to make community-based fishing areas to protect resources and still allow residents to make their catch.""

And how is that different than native fishing and gillnetting rights here?

There is a list of native american tribes that are recognized by the US federal government as independent sovereign entities. The people who live on the island of Molokai are not on the list. IMO it's akin to locals in Cambria getting angry at people from Bakersfield who come to 'their area' to harvest fish. But the fish are a community resource that are jointly owned by everybody in the state/country, so it seems absurd to create a locals-only reserve.

It might have the same or worse results if someone in a drift boat ploughed a net set up.  I would be cool with indigenous peoples have their own fishing and hunting preserves if they live the same way they did 1000 years ago. I think they should hop on board the same train as everyone else though if they want to build a casino and sell meth.
