i have a question.
i dont have a paid subscription yet ,just looking in advance.
if i download one of my trips to my unit, do i have to keep the chip in ?
i never cover a whole lake in 1 trip  and would like to know where i been,
with out relying on my memory. and still record a sonar log.

Your genesis track, after you download it from your free 1-year subscription (from LRC) to a blank chip, will need to be left in your unit.  You unit reads off the chip to view that information contained on the chip.  Let's say you want to add more info to that same genesis mep, no problem ... just record on that chip.  You can see that map trail at the same time you are recording more info.  The only think you DON'T want to do is record/save or do anything with your computer to the "store bought" map chips like Navionics, GOLD chip, Lowrance Insight HD or PRO, etc...  If you corrupt those files/chips, they won't give you a replacement & you are out $100+

I've had people ask/say:  I want to see the maps on my GOLD or Navionics chip and record Genesis at the same time.  The unit does have a TINY amount of internal memory (really only ideal for a few screenshots).  The only way to read from a "store bought" map chip [ie. Navionics GOLD, Lowrance Insight Pro/HD, etc] AND record/Save to a blank chip at the same time is to use a much larger unit that has 2 chip slots; HDS 9 Touch & Larger.  This is how the Bass & Walleye tourney guys do it.

For now, with these smaller units, it's and either-or situation.  Either read from a "store bought" Navionics/Lowrance chip OR record Genesis to a blank (and see your existing Genesis at the same time).

Hope this helps a little bit ...

Bill

Why can't they have more internal storage? Isn't sdhc memory super cheap these days?

Good questions ...  not sure.  I do know that Genesis came out after the engineering of the units so maybe it wasn't a criteria of the design at the time?  Earlier HH GPS units didn't have a card slot so having internal memory & a "patch cable" was a necessity.  Two different paths of similar units it seems.  The earlier "use" of the internal memory was for a few screen captures & storing small files like waypoints, routes & trails.  Though these units are industry leading by their own, they are still in their 'infancy' and we will see huge leaps & bounds in the near future.

Think back just a few years & color screens in a FF/GPS was "new" and very $$$$.  Just before that (early/mid 90's), Handheld GPS units were "new" and only a few years after that the addition of maps to them were "new".  The fishfinder/flasher has been around for 60+ years and fairly unchanged for over half of that time.  Technology is the marine realm is expanding rapidly and I'm sure will continue to do so even faster (ie. non-linear).

Less than 2 years ago Lowrance introduced down-scan imaging & Structure Scan imaging.  Less than a year ago, they introduced Spotlight Scan.  A month ago they introduced forward looking scanning.  Next week ?????  Wireless?  3D?  Cloud?

Cool video Bill.
For the size of these units they are extremely powerful and capable. If you really get into the unit, it has some amazing features that most fisherman don't use... but when you do, it's a whole new game. I believe that one of the most important features to being a successful pro bass or otherwise is mastering the use of the ff and taking advantage of all it's features on and off the water.

As for what's next... hummm. Maybe waterproof wireless transducer via ipod that integrates with your phone and/or Google glasses. Maybe this ipad software will connect through bluetooth to your phone and multiple cameras for recording multiple angles all at the same time. Also record and log and translate GPS data to maps while otw, instantly.

That would be cool... doable... yes, now, ahhh maybe soon....

Wish List: a FF that can access & store data to the cloud while paired to your iphone via bluetooth. Oh, and it also have a built in VHF radio.

I read on the insight genesis site that there was enough room left on the 'lake insight pro' chip to record sonar logs...I was out today and used it to record some logs and uploaded them.  I don't want to corrupt this chip...am I safe deleting these logs?   Maybe I should just leave them on?  I will definitely use a blank card from now on when recording sonar... Really digging the crowdsource mapping aspect of this unit...are there any saltwater areas in the social mapping?

that would be awesome!  A ff finder with Bluetooth and vhf built in?! Might as well include the NFL package and I won't have to choose every Sunday!!!

Regarding the social mapping & salt vs. fresh.  Since it is social mapping, its up to all those who have units to collectively record & upload.  That's what makes up the "social".  If nobody records & uploads salt or fresh or particular areas, then there won't be insight maps of those areas.  You will also start to see parts of lakes with great maps while others parts of the same lake with a standard map.  I have a few areas on Lake Don Pedro COVERED but most parts of the lake are standard.

The new Lowrance HDS Gen3 has Bluetooth and WiFi built in for 2015!!!!
