I am itching for a kayak. Due to having no space, I will probably put it on my car permanently.
Before I pull a trigger and make a big mistake, please school me.

- Will it get any dent from tie down when expose to sun ?
- How to protect it from thief ?
- .....anything else I need to aware of.

Thanks NCKA.

Yes, denting (oil canning) is always a possability.  As for theft, I generally pass a good quality bike cable thru a scupper hole & around the roof rack.  Nothing is fool proof.  If they really want it, they will get it.

You can always store strapped and locked upright to a telephone pole or a wall.  GF has done that for years with hers with no detrament

Mine stay on my car most of the time...I take em off to dive or to loan them out or to sell them.  :smt005

I keep them upside down and don't crank the straps down TOO right and haven't had any oil canning issues to speak of...

Just use a cable lock if worried about theft.

Jim

Always ready for a dive! Do you always keep your wetsuit and gear in the rig too, Jim?

What about sun damage due to constant exposure? Any color fading?

That's because you don't live in Redding, they wouldn't make it past one summer  :smt044

Of course!   :smt003

Yeah...to be honest...I live in an area with a mild climate and with pretty low crime...so should probably take my situation with just a grain of salt.

But...IMHO...if you have to choose between having a yak and storing it cable locked on top of your rig or NOT having a yak...do the car topping!!

I kept one stored upside down on my truck in Florida for a few years.  Little to no sun damage that I could tell.

Not to thread-jack, but my youngest has moved to Ukiah and needs a secure spot to store an Eddyline Equinox 14'.  He will pay for the storage.  Anybody?
