Be prepared to live without electronics, even for a couple of days.

The fiber optic line connecting ft Bragg to the outside world was severed two days ago and we just got our internet and cell service back.

Some companies had back up connections, but many failed when the main link failed.

It was a little crazy listening to people who just couldn't handle not being able to check facebook or text people at all hours.  This was from some of the older folks.  I would expect that from Jr high students. 

My daughter couldn't get gas or anything from the stores that use ATM machines and had to remind her to be more prepared. 

I always keep emergency cash, food and gas just for such an emergency.  On the coast the issues are usually because of storms, but works just the same if an accident takes out communications. And I am convinced terrorist will intentionally cut communications and power to cities in the future, so do what you can to get by while everyone else is going crazy.   

And if I don't check NCKA every couple days the new posts will stack up. 

I was worried about the title of the thread.
I thought maybe they outlawed gps or fish finders.
I have never had cell phone service...ever....so I don't see what all the hoopla could be.
And some say I'm behind the times.........way ahead of it.

Yeah I thought this was going to be about enviro-nazis petitioning to ban fishfinders because they hurt whales or something...haha! But that's a bummer about the situation in Bragg--and excellent reminder to stash some cash under my bed in case it ever happens to me.

We are Verizon customers and only one of us occasionally could connect to another carrier's  network, but the other phones were just very expensive clocks during the outage.  I want some IPA, maybe I can get some for the inconvenience.  That's pretty sad these companies don't have redundancy to account for a damaged line.

Just heard they only ran temp lines to get service back but it will go back out before the new line is connected. 

Good time to go fishing.

It doesn't bother me to be without internet and cell phones. I do drawn the line when my TV is messed with. Good thing we switched to satellite. 

Yep, the online Albion campground reservation system was down too.

They have no internet at the campground so if you try to call to make a reservation for next year, they will put you on a waiting list.

I left a message on Sat and did not get a call back. Called late yesterday afternoon, they answered, booked 2 sites.

Hunh?  We didn't have internet for a few days?  Kidding.

Some of my coworkers had to go home because their daycare center's fire alarm wouldn't work offline.  Towns like Albion and Mendocino had no real emergency services functioning--from what I heard.

Wow, it sure is amazing how dependent we got to this technology so fast.  Like, I couldn't watch Netflix and stuff......serious.
