I'm in San Mateo for work and am itching to scope out some new fishing grounds. I see that HMB state beach is close and that in the past there have been some NCKA hookups/fish and chills there. Anyone know how the perch fishing has been lately? I'm probably gonna cruise over there tonight. Company/suggestions welcome  :smt006

I haven't fished that coastline for perch in a few years so I don't know how the fishing is lately, but I would usually start at the beach off Poplar St and work my way north/south.  Poplar street is only a couple miles south of HMB state beach if you want to give it a shot.  I've had some good luck at this beach.

You just drive all the way to the end, then there is a parking lot to your left.  You will see a wide trail that leads down to the beach. Watch out for the horse crap though.   :smt044

Good luck!

Linda Mar and Pacifica (Calico perch and Red Tail), if you want further south, San gregorio and Pescadero.

Perch fishing is all right in the HMB area. There's quantity but not quality size fish.  My uncle just caught a 18lb striper this morning at San Gregorio beach 1 hour after a tide change

I got to the spot at about 6:30 and walked south casting motor oil grub w/ a 2 oz weight and a 3 ft mono 6lb leader. Walked and casted for about an hour w/ no bites  :smt009 I put on a krocadile and threw for stripers for about an hour and no goes  :smt010 Was still a blast seeing a new spot and chatting it up with the locals.

Thanks for the tip Pat. I guess I've always felt like I needed a heavier weight to cast far but maybe not. What's the benefit of using a lighter weight?
