Hello Everyone going to be moving to Berkeley this coming fall and would like to be getting into some kayak fishing starting next year. already have a kayak in mind and have padelled before. Hope to meet some of you great people and get some crabbing done before the next year! I was looking into getting a Nativewatercraft Slayer 13 Propel by decemember with all my gear but I also could use some suggestions for a beginner kayak. I'm 5'6 230lbs but have a poor shoulder from high school football.

Welcome to NCKA Kevin  :smt006  Native Watercraft Slayer 13 is a fine kayak for hand free fishing.

Welcome, Kevin.

I'd suggest demoing the Hobies and the Natives before you buy either.

I have the Hobie Outback and I'm REALLY happy with it. It is pretty heavy though, which might be tough loading and unloading with a messed up shoulder. The Hobie Revolution is lighter. Not sure how heavy those Native pedal drive yaks are...

Anyway, welcome aboard! I live in Albany. Let's fish some time.

Glad to be on such a friendly forum. I've been working on rehabing the shoulder with weights and it has helped. I think the native is somewhere between 80-100 which doesnt sound to bad to me. Hope to meet some of you in future events

What you talking about Willis?  :nono:

A Newer Outback Hull is 62lbs,,,Max, I lift it quite easily onto my shoulder…  My AI is 77lbs plus and I can feel the difference…

it's the way the solid handle is on the Outback that makes "technique" easy to lift, at least for me, and I'm injured…  and throw it onto the top of a Suburban

so I think your stats are a bit off Bro,

not trying to dis a propel, I know nothing about them, but your dead wrong about the Outback weight being 75lbs or even 83.3, or I'm stronger than I thought I was,  at least smelling that is….   :booty:

I can lift a Slayer propel on my shoulder too, but that doesn't make it any less 85lbs :)

An AI hull is 87lbs or so.  Problem with lifting those is they're so long and the weight is not perfectly distributed due to placement of crossbars, so shoulder carrying is difficult.

And actually I've been meaning to put a bunch of different kayaks on a shipping scale to test the "honesty" of the claimed weights.

I remember the revo weighing 58# (2010 model). Maybe they owned up to it and stopped fibbing on the published weights.

I did a search and here is the spec that Sonny found for the earlier revo's (Outback should be similar for that year):
Fishing version specs and features:

Specifications:
Length: 13' 5 " / 4.09 m
Width: 28.5" / 0.7 m
Hull Weight: 58 lbs. / 26.3 kg
Mirage Drive Weight: 6.6 lbs. / 3.0 kg
Capacity: 350 lbs. / 159 kg
