Trailers are great but don't forget the bridge toll jumps to $15.00 for three axels.  I use Hullivators for car-topping on my Subaru Outback and they're great but very pricey.  I trailer behind the "Man Van" because car topping just isn't practical with my roof height.

Stackers work but they suck for big boats. They are made for little boats.

I'd almost be ok with investig the money on one because that part can change cars. But the $400 that's tied to only this car. Ugh.

Did the QX4 comes with factory crossbars? (luggage rack) Like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/96-04-QX4-Pathfinder-Roof-Rack-Crossbars-Black-OEM-Luggage-Beam-Nissan-Infiniti-/151339490648?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item233c895d58
Because you can strap you kayak directly to those, upside down...without any additional rack accessories. I've been doing this for years. If I need to transport 2 kayaks (on wife's Pacifica or my Passat), I use a J-rack for the one yak (usually the wider yak) and strap the other one onto the factory crossbars upside down.
Lifting the yak overhead seems difficult but it's all about the lift technique. Once you get it down, it's no biggie...and helps if you park beside a curb to gain an extra 8" height.

Sadly no. It came with the factory rain gutters with little slidey eyelet tie down things. I can't even put the yak down on top without a rack because it has this stupid glass thing over the back that would get destroyed. It has toget elevated to clear.

Do you mean factory sidebars? Rain gutters would mean there's essentially nothing there at all.

Railgrab style would work and can be found for <$150 on craigslist.

Oh I guess you mean the factory tracks - I don't have any familiarity with those and Q towers.  But those can usually be found on CL as well.

K thanks for the tips.

Anyone know how the Thule "stacker" works with outbacks?

Can I get the Yakima bars and extension and put the Thule on it!

I got a pair if you want them for cheap

So, I can buy those expensive tower riser things from Yakima, and then just buy a ginormous 65" crossbar to do two side by side upside down yaks? And later if I want a hullivator I can add correct?

Have you tried the pick and pull?  I got my yakima bars and mounts for my 4runner at the east oakland pick and pull for $27, and a tall horchata!!

Good idea, I'll check tomorrow. Gotta go anyway.

Can anyone answer about the bar? If i get the 65" now will it fit the two hobies? And then if I want later I can fit it with 2 hullivators? Trying I move fast want to get out there but don't want to f up and buy the wrong thing.

I could get by with just a 65" bar for a while, as long as it will fit the options later.

Also, if no luck in pick n pull can I buy the specific Yakima mount locally, or am I stuk waiting on mail. I know rei sells the Thule racks but where so the mounting systems come from. In a hirry
