Just curious when y'all get fish and put them on your stringer do you throw the stringer in the water or just them them chill in the back if your yak?

Both.
Usually in the water unless I'm on the move or there are a lot of furbags around.
Then it's in the tank well covered with a wet burlap sack that I splash water on frequently.

Fur bags being sea lions I'm assuming.

I dunk them in the water every 15/20 mins . Just to try to keep them cool..
Keep them lines tight for a great fight!

I dunno. I grew up in the Midwest fishing freshwater and seem to have an irrational fear of there always being a GWS under my yak. Damn you Peter Benchley!

Ever read Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea? It seems to me that fish hanging over the side of your kayak in shark-infested waters can't be a good idea.

Btw, whereabouts in the midwest are you from? I grew up in Iowa, fishing in farm ponds, so I can appreciate your GWS fear (although I'm not sure I'd call it irrational...).

I grew up in the St. Louis area fishing rivers and ponds. I call it irrational because I've probably logged 150 hours of down time scuba diving in the salt. Only have ever seen one shark.

I used to just throw them over the side but I've seen sea lions pop up out of nowhere and I don't want to find out what happens when they decide to grab a fish attached to my yak!

Anyone here been taken for a ride?  Or hear about one?  Worst case scenario in my mind is that you get dumped and the sea lion swims away with your yak in tow...  not good but maybe that's overblown?  I dunno

Get a cheap burlap sack, keep it wet and throw it over your fish in the tank well.  That will keep them wet and out if the sun, just make sure to keep throwing water on it, I just splash water on it with my paddle every now and again.

At GS8 this year TBone had a sea lion bite a cabby he had hanging, then it swam under his yak and bit his leg on the other side. Bit through his dry suit and left a mark. Damn thing was amped up and in attack mode. I always hung my fish up until that moment. Burlap from now on.
So I'm packing my bags for the Misty Mountains, where the spirits go...........

Ouch...  that doesn't sound fun at all!  Not as bad as my worst case scenario but I had never thought about being bitten by the fur bag!

I use this 36x20 "Kill Bag".

Works great with about 5 lbs of ice.
