I don't like the dune color of my new Hobie. A few people have said painting it will decrease the value, but I don't think I care now. I don't see myself ever getting rid of it. Has anyone painted one before? Do I just sand it a bit, then use a plastic paint? Is it a bad idea to try this? Don't want to do anything that could weaken the integrity.

Famous last words.  I think clayman painted his revo to some point, you might want to send him a PM.

It will not ruin the integrity of the plastic. It will decrease the value at resale I believe. There are adhesion promoters out there to help with the bond between the poly the boat is made of and the product you wish to use. This bond is only sketchy at best. If you were painting say an item that was not going to be moved or scratched or chaffed in any way the paint will stick. If you just want to paint it and don't care about having to do touch up now and then , go for it. There is a product called bulldog that is a adhesion promoter. #m makes a poly promoter also. If you have an automotive paint jobber in your area go there and ask. You can use spray paint for sure but you might not be happy with the end result if you are looking for a uniform and quality looking finish. PM me for more info if you want. Craig

Thanks.

I actually am looking to make it uniform. I just want to break it up with some earthy tones for duck hunting later this year.

Plasti Dip is a better option and can be removed when you decide you don't like it.

Buy a camo cover. There are camo covers made for canoes that fit kayaks with an opening for your body. There is a shock cord around the perimeter  of the cover that fits under the top deck area. Ive seen one on a Trident !% and it looked pretty cool. It actually had two openings and one was right over the seating area and the other over the front hatch

I'd rather have it blend in all the time. For some reason dune bothers me  :smt011

I use camo net anyway, just need the base color more earthy to fit in. Another reason I don't like dune is every little bit of mud, dirt, and blood stain shows up and makes it look old and beat up even though it's new.

That's the reason I went with olive for my PA14.  Adding the stickers didn't help though!! LOL

fishmaster has done some yak painting also. His shark teeth still look good after a number of years.

Just go get it wrapped in the exact color you want. Not only will it look good, but improve your kayaks life in the sun.  Lets say you decide to sell it in a few years... I'm sure you could peel the wrap off and have it right back to new for resale.

Seattle Marine has some vinyl paint that I have used in the past on plastic bouys and foam bouys. It seemed to hold up for a number of years in seas and sun; I think the vinyl properties allow it to expand and contract with the surface its adhered to....

disclaimer: never tried it on a kayak thou  :smt003

I got stoked when I looked up pictures of vinyl wraps. Then I saw the price. It looks like most of them cost as much or more than the whole kayak...
