I'm hoping to make my first salmon and rockfish trips this season. Any suggestions on good places to launch? Within a couple hour drive from Vacaville, easy surf launch, reasonable paddle to the fishing area and lots of salmon and rockfish. I've gone crabbing from HMB and Doran but I don't know what the fishing is like there. Any opinions out there? :smt044

The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope.  ~John Buchan

I agree Timber is good, put $8.00 per kayak in the envelope then in mailbox. or if you are after 10 AM go to Fort Ross 10.00 per car.

Kelp beds in Monterey/Carmel can be like fishing in one of those "guaranteed catch" tanks! As long as you're not picky! I've had first time kayak anglers pull limits in an hour and a half while I was diving nearby. I guess the human fish finder helps :) Monterey is well protected from W to NW swells.

I am also pretty new at this, I have launched out of Doran on a salmon hunt once and it was very easy. Ocean Cove is another spot with awesome rock fishing and a very easy launch, I have probably hit that place up a half dozen times and never had any issues, and met some really cool people as well.

You have to fish where the salmon are unlike rockfish where they are in known locations. Most of the places we target salmon from are not technical launches, it is the distance wind and swell that make the conditions challenging. If you get past the launch, distance and conditions then there is the hooking and landing.  Right now there is not a lot of chrome action south of Mendocino.

Pay attention come July.  They should be in close.  And if you see FM1 catch one, that means its wide-fuckin-open  :smt044  If there is a wide open bite, drop everything and get on the water.  I'm not one to falsely call in sick, but if there is a wide open bite in Monterey I'm gonna pull every string I can get my hands on and get down there.  That could be said for WSB too.

Wide open bite right now @ Moss Landing.  Short drive over to the island.  Park anywhere there is an open spot.  Short walk.......
