I use the medium size pool noodles about a foot long or more if I want to. I can also use the large pool noodles if I want to. Just attach it outside your rod and not wrap with it. Cut a channel/groove for the rod shaft to sit on then finish it off with zip ties. It will not get on the way of casting --- trust me. I made a post on instructions in regards to this some time ago (modified rod float) just search for it.

Also,  the only reasons I can think of for your rods to end up in the drink is during a bad surf launch/landing or accidentally dropping it while trying to put it in the rod holder. I really don't know how you can drop it while fighting a fish when your instinct is to hold on dearly to that rod to land that fish.

Ohhh.  I think I remember that on the borrowed rod at HOW. Thanks for the reminder.

I don't.
I cannot echo what Montana said enough.
I have floatation on all the rods not in use.
Here's how I do it.

I don't leash anything but my paddle, and that gets unleashed on every launch and landing.

What Dustin said, except my paddle is unleashed during the launch and the landing.
If you don't know where you're headed, any road could get you there.

Ah! Fixed my post. I don't leash up until out of the danger zone.

Lots of times I just clip it onto my line coming off the reel (for traveling).  While fishing it's not clipped.

And my grippers. Would have lost them a couple times when a ling rolled them out of my hand, but it was leashed, so had to catch the fish again.

How many pool noodles does it require to float a Ugly Stik Tiger rod & Penn reel combo..and what if there's 6oz of weight on there too? That's like 4lbs right?

Those pool noodles are very buoyant. I intentionally threw my setup with weights in the drink with no problem even while pushing it down. I mean if one pool noodle can keep a person afloat, a little rod and reel combo shouldn't be a problem.

I zip tie a SS split ring into the sponge behind the reel.  I find it to be good for more than just a lesh, it also good for when you travel, you can slip a cable lock through it and lock it to the truck so it doesn't go off and find a new home as some rods are apt  to do.  I know , some one is going to chime in and say "Squidder, all they have to do is cu the zip tie,"  and you would be correct, but it keeps honest people honest.  Thieves, well at least it slowed them down a little bit.
