Did a search but did not find anything. I have a short bed Tacoma, and most of saltwater rods are greater than 6'6". I have a camper shell on the truck and can open the back window near the cab. Has anybody done a setup like this? Any pics?

I know a lot of people that string bungie cords across the roof of the camper shell, and hang rods from them.

You could try a 3" or 6" pvc pipe on your rack, like a conduit carrier, and shove rods in there.  I guess it depends on how permanent you want it to be.  Bungie cords and rods through the cab sound good tho.

I usually put my rods on the front passenger side with the butts against the floor and the tips sticking towards the back seats. May not work if you have a passenger sitting up front. Unless they don't mind.

I have a set of thule ski/board racks, I wonder if those would hold the rods for a long trip.

can't you just put the rods in the kayak?  Wrap them up a little with towels and whatnot - I shove a lot of stuff in my kayak before a long trip usually.

I do exactly this, except with Yakima ski rack. I have to remove the reels or they will bang against the roof of my car.

I think I may try this. How do you have the rods facing?

I have my rod tips pointed forwards. But the other way should work too.

One solution is to buy "travel" rods that break into smaller sections or longer rods. The 8' will usually be a 2-piece unlike shorter rods.

There are "conduit carriers" that are lockable caps that attach to a length of ABS pipe and you can attach them with U-bolts to the carrier bars on the truck.

I've used those magnetic Sumo style rod racks on the outside of my truck before. I felt very pretty comfortable driving over 55 miles ago hour with several thousand dollars of Spey rods on there.

I've also made a rod holder for the bed of my truck from a Harbor Freight load bar and then taped a cheap plastic Berkley rod rack to it. It's held up great for the last several years too.  I'll post a pick later this afternoon
