BAM II Crew,
Assuming we the go-head for a pig roast, this will be the thread for responding to some requests for help and info. I did some web surfing on the subject and found some good info. Although some expert info puts my river rock heat source at question. The guy said he only uses volcanic rock, but heard from Texans that river rock is great. So if you know of a source for volcanic rock (big cinder rocks) at least 8in in diameter and/or can haul-in to Mendo enough to fill a big wheel barrow, then let me know. The number of rocks depends upon the size of the pig we get. The rule-of-thumb from the experts is 1lb per person.
The expert said it's possible for some types of rock to explode when heated so we'll have to be real cautious with that step. The kids will need to be warned to stay way back. Quartz rocks would be the kind's not to use.
If someone has a home-made steel fire barrel similar to the old washing machine tub design, then we'll need that to heat rocks.
Those are the only difficult steps to work-out.

I'm sort of thinking that we need some practice for this to happen, or at least have some dedicated pig roasters.

It is a big endevour and we will all be fishing during the day.....

I would be willing to eat it though!

If we are gonna do this, we need to decide today (at least for my hog supplier).

3.50 a pound and sounds like we need a 30-40 pound hog due to the fact that lots of other food is gonna be there.

I can order the hog, we just need to poop or get off the pot.

If someone has a Hawaiian or Samoan friend experienced with a luau,  then we should invite him for Saturday so we don't piss off Pele, Hawaiian goddess of fire.
Seriously, then we can just focus on fish.

Buy one pre-roasted at any Chinese BBQ shop.  I know it's not entirely the same, but it is more or less no-hassle.

Good work Sean!
Now we need volunteers to bring:
1. 3 shovels
2. 3 large trash bags full of leaves or dry hay, maple or sycamor preferred (this lies under the pig)
3. 1 machetti, 1 sledgehammer (to split backbone during carving)
4. 1 old canvas sail (lays over everything)
5. more oak firewood to add to Insaneduane's load (for heating rock lined pit)
6. bring thick work-gloves if you are going to be one of the helpers
Friday early arrivers need to collect river rocks at least 6 inches in diameter and up to basketball size. We need about 4 wheelbarrow-fulls. I will bring a utility trailer and stop at a riverbed along the way to load about one wheelbarrow-full of large river rocks.

I will bring chicken wire, carving knives, banana leaves, salt, pepper, etc. and  perhaps the pig too. I need to check local meat stores today. Mol, what does your supplier say? We need about a 65 lb cleaned-weight pig.

I will edit this post for any more requests.

Meet "Ms. Piggy", our 74lb whole roasting pig from Arizona!! :smt007 :smt008 :smt006 :smt003 :smt001 :smt002

I had to pay for 2nd-day air shipping of extra $90 dollars, total is $300. I searched local, but no luck.
Next time we'll save on shipping. Found two farmers in Watsonville we can use in the future.
I'll will bring it Friday night.
