My lighter. It's always handy
I do the same and it works well for me!   But I also carry my pliers which do a good job, and my PFD knife in a "pinch".  Check out these pliers though if don't have a pair for yakfishing.  They are great to have to pull hooks out of fish and yourself!  Can cut through thick metal, and soft braid too!  :smt003  http://www.homedepot.com/p/DEWALT-11-1-in-Compound-Action-Long-Nose-Pliers-DWHT70277/203040541

I use Fiskars trimming scissors.

Al,

Thanks for the lead on those pliers.   :smt007  Gotta go get me a pair ... or two.  One for the boat & one for the yak.

Its just a safety thing.  Lets say you are busy cutting bait with your PFD knife and you don't see a sneaker wave come up behind you.  It flips you over, you drop the bait knife and your extra knife either falls off the boat or is trapped underneath where you can't reach.  You get entangled in some line, rope, rigging, whatever but have nothing to cut free with.  You need to have a knife ready to access at all times for safety purposes, and the best way is to keep it on your PFD and never use it when on the water unless you need it.

or like if lightning hits me while i'm trimming my nose hairs otw with my knife...or like if...or maybe like if say shamoo comes and tries to get some..but I cant fight it off cuase maybe my knife is all sticky with squid and shit...

just messin...maybe I will try and get second pdf knife/sharp small locking sheath knife...my 5 dollar wally world sheath knife is second nature on my pdf to cut with...i can get it without thinking...natural draw at this point

and as mentioned it does not do a very good clean cut....on braid or mono....takes so tension or backing and bit of work...pliers/scissors...clippers...all get in my way and get rusty..even nice ones...2-3 days otw salt a week will rust stainless imo...even washing and oiling...cheap and wash/oil it...replace ...seems to me to  make more sense...losing a 20-60 $$ item sucks

When I forgot my line cutters last year chasing salmon on the Sacramento River, Herb loaned me a pair of sharp nail clippers. I told him I was using braid, not mono, but he insisted it would work just fine. And to my surprise it did! :smt003
