April and May usually start the SF Bay and NorCal Coast ocean kayak fishing season!  Rockfish season opens during May along much of the NorCal Coast. Salmon usually opens in April and California halibut fishing starts picking-up during this period as well.  Salmon, halibut, lingcod and rockfish are popular gamefish and premier table fare. Additionally, several major kayak fishing tournaments focus on these species throughout the season, starting with Shelter Cove in May, Trinidad in July, and Albion in August.  This is going to be an information-packed, team-taught seminar that will cover basic ocean safety issues along with a load of information on gear, rigs, methods and strategies for targeting these species. Come on down and learn about ocean kayak fishing for these species and swap fishing info and stories with other local kayak anglers.

Ocean Kayak Fishing Safety:

Safety is paramount to kayak fishing in the salt. Mike Totaro (“Tote”) will cover the basic issues that all saltwater kayak anglers need to learn and follow to deal with the unique set of safety concerns involved with fishing from kayaks on SF Bay and the Pacific Ocean.  Mike is a very experienced ocean kayak angler and great teacher and will provide an overview on clothing, food/liquids, hypothermia, weather and other critical safety issues.

Rockfish/Lingcod:

Mike Lavoie (“Wingshooter”) will provide a discussion on strategies, gear and rigs for targeting jumbo rockies and lings.  Mike is a Hobie Fishing Team Member and representative for Lowrance and will provide a demo on how to link Google Earth to your FishFinder to locate structure and target bottomfish.  Then once you get there, he’ll discuss some of the tricks and rigs for scoring quality rockies and lings.

California Halibut and Salmon:

With the low rainfall and subsequent low run-off, south SF Bay waters are already reaching 60 degrees Farenheit and California halibut have been caught over the last 3 weeks.  Additionally, a 30-lb halibut was caught off Santa Cruz 4 weeks ago. So it’s getting to be time to chase halibut!  Recent 2014 salmon projections for the Sacramento River system are suggesting another good year of ocean salmon fishing along the California coast, pending possible effects from the developing El Nino. Should be decent numbers of quality 4-year old fish in the mix as well.  2013 was a banner year for kayak salmon fishing north of SF Bay, let’s hope 2014 brings plenty of salmon within kayak range in 2014!  Chuck Espirtu (“ChuckE”) and John Keane (“Bird”) will tag-team these topics and cover regs, gear, rigs and strategies for targeting ocean salmon and SF Bay/ocean halbut, including how to consider water temps, salinity, and tides for SF Bay halibut.

With the longer days and nice, warm Sacramento evenings we’ll fire-up the grill, BBQ some man-dogs and do it up NCKA potluck style.  CCK will provide dogs, buns, fixings, plates, utensils, water/soda.  Please bring a food item or drinks to share with our group.

Please post-up here, shoot me a PM, or RSVP with CCK at the phone number above if you will attend so we can plan the BBQ.

I am planning on expanding my fishing into ocean waters this year. This sounds like the place to be to get a good introduction to ocean fishing. Count me in!

We should be good on chairs.  I'll post-up if anything changes.

No plans right now but might check with ChuckE regarding a CCK-Bay Area seminar.  There will a number of seminars at the Berry Kayak Festival too.

Could also see about carpool options from the Bay Area.  Maybe check with Tiny as it sounds like he may come on up.  Hope some folks from the Bay Area can make it up and hangout.
