Hey Guys,
Been reading on forum about some vhf radios.   seems many like the Standard Horizon HX851 radio.   One of the "higher end" radios, pricewise.

This radio retails $249.00.   If You  "add to cart" they list their price now, for  $199.00.   Also,  there is a $30 rebate from Manufacturer....so  net price after rebate is  $170.00  for this radio.

I think this is  good price?    Do you?

Check this site on web:   http://www.thegpsstore.com/Standard-Horizon-HX851-Handheld-VHF-Radio-with-GPS-P2312.aspx

I also have this VHF radio and bought it on sale for about the same price. A little bulky, but great radio.

Sounds like a great price!  I'd love a higher end radio with GPS.   :smt002

That's a good price, I have the generation before that one that can't store waypoints, it does float well, yardsale at SWS and found it floating under the pier a half hour later and still going strong. I like the distress signal, one push of of a button and it sends the coast guard your waypoint and a distress signal. Cons : strobe is not that bright and its pretty bulky on the vest, battery life is avg about 6-8 hours

Hi Med Medic,
Thanks for the turn to the GPS Store. I have been planning on buying the HX851 before the rebate ends in July from West Marine for $249.
The GPS Store for $199,free shipping and later the $30 rebate is a great deal. Saved me about $75.
It's coming on Monday!!

I'm getting ready for summer.  Just bought the West Marine VHF460 today.  The sales guy told me it's actually manufactured by Uniden, it's the Uniden MHS235.  They claim it gets 10+ hours on a full charge.  Floats, submersible, DSC, etc.  So far it's been easy to figure out and I've never used a marine radio before.

What channels do most NCKA members scan?  I saw 68 and 69 mentioned on another post.

Hi sportfisher,

You might want to check out the gpsstore.com.
The HX 290 which is $104.95 free shipping (When you ADD TO CART) , no tax and Standard Horizon has a $20 rebate until July 2014.
You might also want to check out the HX 300 which is $124.95 when you ADD TO CART and free shipping, no tax and $20 rebate. The HX 300 has a nice feature if you fish at night or so. It has a water activated light when you drop it into the water.

I ended up buying the HX851 for $199 when you ADD TO CART and has a $30 rebate. Since I mostly go open ocean fishing during Rockfish season, I opted for the added GPS feature and one touch call that will send a distress message to the Coast Guard and automatically give them your GPS location. My wife is a little less anxious now when I go out by myself.

The gpsstore prices are deceving because once to ADD TO CART it lists and much cheaper price!!!
I was told by the vets at NCKA that Standard Horizon radios is one of their top recommendations for a great VHF waterproof handheld.

Invest in a a good radio, one day your life may depend on it!!
Take Care,

Da Bruddah (Michael)

Personally, get a good quality VHF radio with 5 watts of power and minimally water resistant to X amount of feet. I've always purchased Standard Horizon for my boat and Kayak. It a 280H model and works well. Here is one piece of equipment everyone should consider if fishing in the ocean or camping in the Sierra. A ACR 2881 ResQLink+ PLB Floating Personal Locator Beacon. Having a GPS built in to your VHF radio seem good but in real emergency not sure you would be in any condition to broadcast or activate. Not sure how the GPS works on a hand held. Maybe its easier to broadcast your location but me I would rely on satellite positioning and direct signal for help.

Bought one ofr GF last year, decent radio for the money.  Also bulky, I got her an army nylon radio holder and velcroed it her PFD so it could hold it on there without issues.
