I am on my 3rd radio.  First 2 where SH, now I use an Icom M24.  I like it better, compact size, great audio, always reliable.

I have seen these on amazon was wondering if it is a good deal for somone who needs a pair of basic radios or do they not have the right power and features?

http://www.amazon.com/Standard-Horizon-HX100-Handheld-Marine/dp/B00AJVX4YY/ref=sr_1_32?ie=UTF8&qid=1397609228&sr=8-32&keywords=vhf+floating

I'll second the Icom hand held radios - was given a m34 when my stepfather sold his boat - it's at least 4-5 years old and still works great & holds a charge for days of repeated monitoring. Liked it so much that I just bought an Icom m24 - noticeably smaller, still has tons of great features, but takes a little more knowledge to get around it's functions. Very convenient that you can also get the cigarette lighter adapter for charging on the road (need a plug for the m34) on long trips & camping etc. Can't wait to get it wet :) While shopping, I was surprised to see so many radios that were 'waterproof' but did not 'float' or weren't 'floating'. I thought that was the point....

I purchase the Lowrance Link-2.  Floats, GPS, MMSI registered, tracks other MMSI craft in the area, covered panic button.  Price about $200.  Replacement battery $75.  Found that out the hard way, salt water in PFD pocket, metal grommet on pocket drain, bad combination when exposed charging tabs came in contact with the grommet.  Fried one of the tabs making it impossible to recharge.  Solve that issue with a new metal less PFD.  No problem since.

Thanks for sharing this experience..

So here's my experience to share with anyone in the purchasing pipeline......
I am in process of replacing 3rd VHF myself..
Thought I had the right solution 3 yrs ago by going thru West Marine and their ext warranty program...
That idea is a bust as I have been getting the run around from WM's 3rd party warranty entity, AMTrust group..
2 months  later and after over 12 calls I still have to Return Authorization for my radio...

I think this time I will deal directly with Standard Horizons 3 yr warr and forego WM a crappy ext warranty service..

I've tried Icom but after experiencing reception issues went with a HX851.  The HX851 is a great radio!

Second vote for the HX851.  I put the mike extension on it and it never comes out of my pocket.

my backup is an older Standard Horizon 460 submersible.  Small powerful and great battery life.

I have 2 standard Horizon HX751 radios and they have taken a beating, dunking, not rinsed off all the time and they work great except I am replacing the antenna.

I have 2 Standard Horizon Radio, the 760s and HX 851. Both serve me well and never have a problem  with it. Dunked twice in the water and still going on.  Batteries last me all day long too.
