Is it possible, being the water is low, that we can go around the Reservoirs with our gps fish finders and make structures marks and see what they look like?  Has anyone done this?

Absolutely, yes.  Not only GPS points, but also photos.  I'm sure a lot of guys are currently using the unique opportunity the drought is providing...right?  If my home lakes were as low as other CA reservoirs, that's what I'd spend most of my time doing.  Almanor's currently only 12 feet below full pool, and the PG&E hydrographer for the area estimated a drop of only ten more feet if we received zero rain/snow between now and October.

Yup...last time I was at San antonio it was 6% capacity and marked some spots while in my yak in the water (and took tons of photos of shoreline/bottom). Same structures & channels I've paddled over dozens of times.
But I wished I had a handheld gps at the time...so I could drive around the lakebed & mark spots. What is the easiest way to do that using my iphone?

The pg&e execs with homes on the peninsula don't want to look at an empty lake.

I have been doing that for a few months now. As the water drops i am paddling the shoreline and marking what i am next to. I need to Bring a spare power source and get out of the boat and do some walking to. Headed to Folsom in the next day or two and will be doing that. Been marking Bullards and Folsom a lot.

Probably, but there are several other reasons why Almanor never sees the dramatic water level fluctuations seen on other CA reservoirs.  It is estimated that roughly half of Almanor's inflow comes from springs on the lake bottom.  The rivers flowing into the lake are also heavily influenced by spring flows.  In addition, PG&E isn't hamstrung with minimum flow requirements for anadromous fish.  They only have to release the minimum required under their FERC license, which during the cold months isn't that much.  And the lake is only utilized for hydroelectric power, not as a municipal or agricultural water source.

Great idea!  I think if you take a picture with your smartphone it might capture the GPS coordinates with the picture.  I would bet there is an app for that.  I'll have to look into that.

Alright I've done some checking into this and found this great link with information about geotagging photos with GPS info.

It looks like there are a number of apps for IOS and Android users.

Hey Chris. Almanor eventually ends up down the feather river so it is very much used for agriculture. Hydro first tho.

I have a GPS phone app Motion X that allows you to take a picture that can be attached to a waypoint. All of $2. You might want to consider that.

Eventually, yeah.  But they'll probably drain all of Oroville first before they start nudging PG&E to give up the water from their "Stairway of Power" in the NF Feather watershed.

How much of PG&E power is derived from hydro sources?
