I'd love to have a kayak fisherman on one of my panels.  Much better than some of the idiots who wind up deciding cases.  Do your civic duty man! :smt001

What is so bad about jury duty?

We need good jurors to make our system function properly.  If you can't afford jury duty because you are self employed or you aren't paid by your employer or you are responsible for care of a young child or something, then you should be able to defer it.  Otherwise, go!

When you get there, look around and say: "Where's the GUILTY Bastard?!" They'll dismiss you right away. Lol

I served last year.  Wasn't too bad actually.  Salinas of all places.  If this is truly a financial hardship, they will generally let you off.

Makes me feel sorry for the person on trial. They put their live in the hands of 12 people who aren't smart enough to get out of jury duty! :smt044 :smt044 :smt044

I have a kid brother who is a cop and a brother in law who was a federal cop. I got pulled early on two tours and have never been called again  :smt003

I used to refrain from voting, thinking that would diminish the odds of being summoned.  A lot of good that did.  I ended up on a domestic violence panel . . . the week after the bar exam!

the experience was enlightening

Third time in 10 years? Stop complaining. I get a notice ever year and served only once...for an hour (the guy pleaded).

Yeah, I saw a guy get dismissed.  He showed up with his summons made into a name tag laminated and hanging from his shirt pocket.  He said that the police don't make mistakes and the person wouldn't be there if they weren't guilty.

Or go the George Carlin route: Tell them you'll make a terrific juror because you can spot guilty people *snap your fingers* just like that!

It doesn't have anything to do with voters registration any longer.

Nobody likes jury duty but it is an important part of being a citizen of this great country. I have been called 5 times in the last 10 years and selected to be on 3 juries. I found it to be a worthwhile use of my time. Once you have served on a jury and that jury reached a verdict, there is an increased probability you will be selected again. I hate it when people try to lie there way out of jury duty, it's so obvious to everyone. Not saying you would do that. What if it was you on trial, wouldn't you want somebody who is intelligent, unbiased and can follow the the instructions from the judge? The only people I have seen consistently not selected to be on a jury are lawyers.  :smt005

We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be.

I want to stay as close to the edge as I can without going over. Out on the edge you see all kinds of things you can't see from the center.

People aren’t supposed to look back. I’m certainly not going to do it anymore.”

The only time I have been called upon was early last year.  Guy was up for two different counts of DUI; 1 in downtown Monterey & the second on Hwy 68.  Blew 2x the legal limit both times.  No CA license.  Defended himself in court.  Picked ALL the wrong jurors.  Turned out he just wanted to waste the courts time.  Took 4-1/2 days in court & less than 30 minutes in the deliberation room to find him guilty on all 6 counts.  I REALLY didn;t want to be picked but once I was, it was quite fun.  Got to meet some great people from all walks of the community ranging from a Mayor to one "kid" who just a month earlier had been in that same court room, with the same judge for shoplifting.
